Monthly Datalian Seminar 🎤

August's Datalian Seminar is 🔍

I recommend this to those who are having these concerns

  • I heard that a lot of people write resumes and portfolios on the web these days. Why do they do that? Can I do it too?
  • I am not a major and my job is not related to data. I want to create a data analysis portfolio, but I don't have any data and I don't know where to start. Where do you all get your data?
  • I failed the data analyst application this week. What criteria do the people who hire data analysts use to decide whether or not to accept or reject them? I don't know what else I should prepare, and my confidence keeps falling.
  • I'd like to hear an example of a job transition from a planner to a data analyst.
  • I got a job as a junior data analyst, but I haven't been able to analyze data and just extract data through queries every day. Is this okay?
  • What kind of company is My Real Trip? What does the company's data team do?

📺 In October, we talk about the foundation for creating actions with data!

August Seminar Timeline

#1 - Everything You Need to Know About Hiring a Data Analyst: From Resumes to Interviews

✔ "Your resume should be a service"

  • Speaker Lee Bo-min - Data Analyst / After working as a data analyst at Jobplanet, he is now doing analysis at Datalian.

When I was preparing for employment, I read a lot of articles about resumes and portfolios and attended a lot of seminars. Many of the mentors who gave lectures told me to write and review resumes and portfolios from the perspective of a hiring manager. But when I actually tried to write a resume, I honestly didn't know what hiring managers were thinking and I felt even more lost.
The method I found at that time was “Planning a resume and portfolio like my own web service.” In this lecture, I will talk about what resumes and general web services such as shopping malls have in common, and I will tell you why you should think of your resume as a web service and what its advantages are.

" A story about recruiting data analysts with My Real Trip Data & Insight Lab Director Seunghwa Yang "

  • Speaker Yang Seung-hwa - My Real Trip Data & Insight Lab Director

Many of you are curious about what the criteria are for hiring data analysts.
We'd like to ask Seunghwa Yang some of the questions you've been wondering about when it comes to hiring data analysts, such as what skills are needed, what mindset is needed, and whether there are any preferred career paths or projects.
When he accepted the interview, he said, "I want to help people who are just starting to learn about data." He will also share some of the difficulties he has faced while recruiting data analysts over the years.
This will be an interesting interview for everyone, from seniors who are concerned about hiring a data analyst to those who are preparing to get a job as a data analyst. Please look forward to it!

#2 - Q&A

  • Live Q&A with live webinar attendees
Expand the pre-questions answered in Part 2 💬

Warm up

Q1. My Real Trip's domain can be seen as travel and tourism. Can we say that a data analyst with basic knowledge of the domain does a better job? I'm curious if there were any cases where domain knowledge of travel and tourism was combined with actual data analysis!

Ⅰ. Preparing for a job as a data analyst

Q2. I am considering a graduate school (special graduate school) to become a data analyst and work in data-related fields. I also considered a government-funded program, but I think graduate school would be better. I wonder if graduate school would be a big help to my career.

Q3. I wanted to work with data, so I studied statistics, machine learning, and deep learning. Will I be able to appeal if I apply for a data analysis position such as KPI management and funnel analysis?

Ⅱ. Data Analyst Recruitment Process

Q4. I am curious about what you look at in the resume and what criteria you use to decide which applicants will pass the document screening and which will be eliminated!

Q5. I'm curious about what you mainly want to verify in a data analyst interview and how applicants should prepare for it.

Ⅲ. Preparing for a job as a data analyst

Q6.
(1) When I look at the seminars, I see that many of them are people who started out in other fields and then switched to data analysts. I also see many people who emphasize domain knowledge. I am preparing for my first job, so I have no domain knowledge. Will this put me at a disadvantage in the job market? In addition, there are many career-related job postings, so I feel like I have no place to stand as a newbie who has no social experience.
(2) What is the most required competency for new data analysts?

Q7.
(1) I would like to know the competencies required for applicants who want to transition from other positions to analysts, the verification method, etc.
(2) I am a marketer. How can I change jobs without any data-related experience?
(3) I'm curious about tips for changing careers from a planner to a data analyst.

Q8.
(1) I am currently a new data analyst, but I have not been able to do any related practical work because there are no senior analysts in the company and the data has not been properly constructed. How should I approach preparing for a job change?
(2) I am curious to know if there is a point of view that you consider most important when hiring for a career as a data analyst.

Live participation review
If you're curious 👏

What was the most impressive thing you learned during the seminar?

  • I only created a Notion page, but I had many concerns because I thought that there was not enough content to make a portfolio from the perspective of a newbie. Also, the support that I could submit using the page was limited, so I put it aside, but I got an idea about a path that I could open from Bomin's session today! It was a fresh approach, so it was very stimulating and motivating :) Thank you.
  • Resume as a web service! I think it would be a great project for data analysts.
  • Bomin's career journey with personal branding was so fun and interesting to listen to! Above all, the part where he said that personal branding is showing how I do what I do was a hint to me, who is thinking about personal branding! I also thought that I should work at a company in that direction and try personal branding together.
  • I was impressed by the explanation and service process of why you go to such lengths to write a resume.
  • I was also interested in how Mr. Yang Seung-hwa transitioned into a data-related job, and I remember the part where he said that you can't stop at studying, but apply and record what you learn so that later on, you can write a book and grow.
  • I was impressed by the overall content of Mr. Yang Seung-hwa's answer. I liked that he spoke with confidence and in a refined way, and that he told many stories that were helpful for my career.
  • I was impressed by how you specifically explained what parts of an interview and resume you consider important from the recruiter's perspective.
  • I've found that when hiring, they look more at the problem-solving process than hard skills. I think this will be very helpful for my future job search.
  • The hard-hitting advice from current employees made me realize once again that no company wants people with a passive mindset.
  • The practical advice from professionals really resonated with me. I was particularly concerned about the difference between data analysts and growth hackers, and I was impressed by the content that was not about work, but about what you want to gain from data.
  • In the second Q&A, you explained in great detail the parts that I was actually concerned about, which gave me an opportunity to think again about what I really want to do.

A word to Datalian!

  • I have been to many sessions, seminars, and conferences, but this was one of the smoothest seminars I have ever attended. It was a seminar where I could feel the traces of your efforts and consideration in various fields. I hope to see many more great seminars in the future.
  • I really liked the content, and it seemed like you were trying to create an increasingly cheerful and honest atmosphere, and I was able to participate comfortably. Thank you.
  • I felt that they had prepared thoroughly. When I first listened to the expected 2-hour live lecture, I doubted whether I could fully concentrate, but I felt that the seminar leaders were very capable. Thanks to Hyejeong, who acted as a moderator, who led the seminar smoothly, and the current professionals and dataians who answered any questions honestly without hesitation, it was fun and informative!
  • I happened to find out that a seminar was being held and applied for it at the last minute, but I think it was a good idea. I regret not being able to attend the previous seminars. Please continue to organize informative lectures/seminars in the future.
  • Thank you for always preparing informative seminars that pick out the pain points that data analysts need!
  • Compared to my passion for data analysis, there were times when I lost my direction or wandered. I would like to say that I am truly grateful for the help I received from Datalian, both big and small :)
  • Thank you for the great lecture. I could feel the sincerity of everyone who created the program. Let's meet again in the field!
  • The seminar content was very helpful. I think it was especially helpful for my preparations because the person in charge of the company I was interested in personally explained it to me. Also, I was comforted by the fact that there were many people who had the same concerns as me, and it was even better to be able to hear the answers clearly.
  • This was my first time listening to this lecture, and it was very informative. I realized that I had not prepared properly for employment. I was able to get a good grip on it and at the same time, I was able to reestablish the basic framework of what I wanted to do. I would like to thank all the people who gave lectures until late at night.
  • For me, the monthly seminar is a valuable time to receive feedback on what I have thought and thought about data and data analysis alone for a month. This August seminar was also a time where I was able to review the job preparation process and thoughts I had thought about alone during August, and it was a time that helped me a lot in setting goals for September. Thank you so much for always holding seminars with useful information every month!
  • I was most satisfied with the content and the speaker, and I was especially satisfied with the seminar progress. I felt that the communication was clear and without exaggeration, and thanks to that, the interview felt smooth as if we were in the same room rather than remotely. It was an opportunity to learn a lot.
