[Free Special Lecture] Designing Sign-Up, Subscription, and Cancellation Screens Without Dark Patterns — Real-World Audits of Korean and International Services and the Legal Boundaries Under the E-Commerce Act

A practical UI design masterclass that helps you avoid violating Korean law or getting caught up in refund disputes after copying the signup forms, pre-tax pricing tables, and seven-click cancellation modals of famous overseas SaaS products. It compares the original texts of the amended Electronic Commerce Act (which took effect on February 14, 2025, and prohibits six types of online dark patterns), the Personal Information Protection Act, and the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection (KISA’s 7th edition of its guidelines) against 16 real-world screenshots from nine Korean and international services, one by one. It also provides five ready-to-copy Korean UI text templates, a 12-item pre-launch checklist, and three AI audit prompts.

What you will gain after the course

  • Screen-by-screen boundaries for the six major online dark patterns prohibited under Articles 13(6) and 21-2 of the amended Electronic Commerce Act, effective February 14, 2025 (hidden renewals · drip pricing · preselected options · false hierarchy · obstruction of cancellation/withdrawal · repeated interference)

  • How to design a safe sign-up and newsletter onboarding form in compliance with Articles 15 and 22 of the Personal Information Protection Act (the four required disclosures and immediate activation of the Continue button when optional items are left unchecked) and KISA’s 7th guide (the “Consent to Receive Promotional Information” label and sender identification)

  • Three-layer safeguards: display the total price including VAT (10%) on the first screen; provide advance notice of the switch to the regular price and any price increase after the first-month discount (consent within 30 days · notice 7 days in advance); and clearly establish the conditions for partial refunds on multi-session courses and withdrawal restrictions on individual digital files (free sample + bold notice next to the button + separate checkbox).

  • A retention modal design formula based on real-world paid cancellation tests across Typecast, ElevenLabs, and Google Workspace: reduce churn and prevent legal disputes with “4-click completion + 1-time benefit offer + 50:50 symmetrical buttons + retain expiration date and 1-click recovery”

Why is it risky to copy overseas SaaS checkout pages and cancellation modals as-is?

A practical special lecture for solo creators and service planners preparing to launch websites, paid newsletters, Notion templates, or online courses made with AI. To help you avoid violating Korean law or getting caught up in refund disputes after copying the signup screens, pre-tax pricing tables, or seven-click cancellation modals of popular overseas services, I personally subscribed to and canceled nine services, measuring the number of clicks and the size of each button.

Effective 2025. 02. 14.

Fully enacted revised E-Commerce Act: Ban on six major online dark patterns (violations are subject to corrective measures and fines of up to 30 million won)

Measured on 2026. 10. 18.

Side-by-side comparison of 16 actual screenshots from 9 domestic and international services (4-click 50:50 symmetrical cancellation best practice vs. 7-click email-typing control group)

15-Minute Pre-Launch Check

5 ready-to-copy Korean UI copy templates (T1~T5) + 12-item self-audit checklist + 3 AI audit prompts (P1~P3)

If you’ve ever had these concerns before opening the checkout page, be sure to check this out.

Can I write “By subscribing, you are deemed to have consented to receiving marketing communications” below the subscription button?

When running a first-month-for-1,000-won promotion, when and how should you notify customers that they’ll be automatically charged the regular price the following month?

Do I have to issue a full refund if someone asks for one right after downloading a Notion template or ebook PDF?

Is offering a customer who wants to cancel a 30% discount coupon once a dark pattern violation?

All four are determined not by the wording of the terms, but by the placement of checkboxes and buttons on the screen. From Lessons 1 through 6, we clearly explain the relevant legal provisions and provide screenshots of actual interfaces.

Finished product: a 1:1, real-world comparison of current legal provisions with 16 screenshots from 9 services

Rather than abstract legal theory, we compared, step by step, 16 screenshots captured by clicking through nine services—The Rundown AI, Google Antigravity, Canva, Perplexity, Suno, Kling AI, Typecast, ElevenLabs, and Google Workspace—with the original text of current laws (as of October 15, 2026).

Step 1 Consent Screen: What Should Be Left Blank, and What Should Be Separated?

가입 동의창 실측 비교: 선택 체크박스를 비워 두어도 다음 버튼이 즉시 켜지는 Google Antigravity 모범 화면과 필수 약관을 분리한 Canva 동의 게이트

Key safeguards (Article 22(5) of the Personal Information Protection Act and Article 21-2 of the E-Commerce Act): All checkboxes must be unchecked by default, and the sign-up button must be enabled immediately even if optional items are left unchecked. Also, in accordance with the KISA Guidelines, 7th edition (p. 12), do not bury this consent in the terms and conditions or circumvent it with a “Benefits Notification Consent”; clearly state the name [Optional] Consent to Receive Promotional Information and identify the sender.

Two-Stage Pricing and Withdrawal from a Subscription: What Are the Safeguards for Tax Additions and Refund Restrictions?

요금표와 청약철회 실측 비교: 결제 마지막 창에서 세금이 추가되는 해외 결제창 주의 사례와 부가세 포함 총액 및 환불 기준을 사전 고지한 Perplexity 한국 안내 화면

Pricing Disclosure Requirements (Articles 13(6) and 21-2 of the Electronic Commerce Act): Listing only the pre-tax amount in the initial pricing table and adding 10% VAT at the final payment screen risks being considered drip pricing. Display the final total, including VAT, from the first screen, and when a free trial or first-month promotional price converts to the regular price, obtain separate, explicit consent within 30 days of the conversion date and provide advance notice at least 7 days before payment.

Withdrawal from a digital content purchase (proviso to Article 17(2)(5) of the Act on Consumer Protection in Electronic Commerce): Online courses divided into multiple lessons are divisible content, so terms stating “no full refund even if you watch just one lesson” are at high risk of being deemed unenforceable (the general rule is to refund lessons not viewed within 7 days). For an indivisible, one-off PDF or Notion template, all three requirements must be met for the withdrawal restriction to be valid: ① provide a free preview sample + ② display a bold notice immediately next to the payment button + ③ provide a separate checkbox.

Three-Step Subscription Cancellation: A Measured Comparison of the Cancellation Processes for Three Paid Services

Preventing cancellation obstruction and improper hierarchy: Replicating high-friction cancellation flows used in enterprise (B2B) admin systems—such as hiding the option in a “More” menu or requiring users to type an email address manually over 7 clicks—in consumer (B2C) subscription services carries significant risks. As the measured comparison table below shows, the cleanest formula is completion in 4 clicks + exactly 1 personalized offer + symmetrical 50:50 buttons + retaining the expiration date and enabling one-click recovery.

Domestic B2C best practice / Typecast

Complete in just 4 clicks + offer a lower-tier plan

Go directly from the first screen of billing management. Offer a lower-tier plan that saves ₩60,000 per month once, keep access active through the end of the current billing period even after cancellation, and provide a one-click [Undo plan cancellation] button.

Global B2C best practice / ElevenLabs

Complete in just 4 clicks + evenly matched buttons

Show the remaining 30,731 credits as approximately 31 minutes of audio, and if users select insufficient usage as their reason for canceling, offer a 30% discount for next month exactly once. Make the [Accept Offer] and [Cancel Plan] buttons the same size, with 50:50 prominence.

B2B high-friction control group / Google Workspace

A total of 7 clicks + manually typing the email address

Cancellation requires navigating the hidden submenu under More (MORE), getting past the asymmetrically emphasized blue button offering an 80% discount, and typing the admin email address directly. (One twist: data is restored intact if you repurchase within 51 days of canceling.)

A Preview of Ready-to-Copy Korean UI Text Templates

The Lesson 1 class materials PDF includes five types of standard Korean copy (T1–T5), covering everything from signup consent screens and pricing tables to withdrawal and cancellation modals. Here are two samples.

Practical Copy Examples: Consent to Receive Promotional Information (T1) and a Four-Click Symmetrical Cancellation Modal (T5)

Template T1 (for copying and pasting into a signup and newsletter consent window)

☐ [Required] Agree to the Terms of Service (View full terms)
☐ [Required] Consent to the collection and use of personal information (Purpose: Member identification and service provision / Information collected: Email address / Retention period: Immediately deleted upon account withdrawal / You have the right to refuse consent, but refusing will restrict your ability to sign up)
☐ [Optional] Consent to receive promotional information (Sender: [Service Name] / Receive emails about new features, discounts, and newsletters. Refusing consent will not restrict your ability to sign up or use basic services.)

Template T5 (4-click, 50:50 symmetric cancellation modal—ready to copy and paste)

Wait! Even if you cancel now, you can continue using your remaining [잔여 크레딧/이용권] until [만료일], which you’ve already paid for.
If you’ve been concerned about the cost because you don’t use the service often, would you like to apply a one-time offer for 30% off next month?
[Keep my subscription with 30% off next month] (50% width) | [Complete cancellation without the offer] (50% width, same font size and contrast)

Three things you’ll take away after the course

1. 6 Measured Comparison Videos (14 minutes) and a 3-Question Review Quiz

Six lessons distilling 16 real-world screenshots from nine domestic and international services (with personal information obscured by solid-color blocks) and six dark pattern safeguards, plus an auto-feedback quiz that displays the answers and explanations immediately upon submission.

2. Course materials, PDF page 5 (c13_safe_subscription_funnel_kit.pdf)

The six dark-pattern safety guidelines and a comparison chart of cancellation processes across three companies, plus five ready-to-copy Korean UI text templates (T1–T5). You can download them directly from [Course Materials] in the upper-right corner of Lesson 1.

3. A 15-minute, 12-item pre-launch checklist and 3 AI audit prompts (P1–P3)

Sign-up consent window (4 items), pricing table and cancellation of subscription (4 items), cancellation flow (4 items), a pre-launch self-audit checklist, and 3 copy-and-paste prompts for proofreading the wording on your screens.

The order in which the six lessons are covered

Lesson 1

[Start with the finished product] Get a clear overview of everything from revealing value without requiring a login and prompting sign-up at the moment of action (The Rundown AI) to all six dark patterns in the revised E-Commerce Act, which took effect on February 14, 2025.

Lesson 2

[Consent Dialog] We’ll align with the standards for the four key privacy notices and the name “Consent to Receive Promotional Information” in KISA’s 7th [guideline], covering unchecked optional consent that lets users proceed immediately (Google Antigravity) and the separation of required consent gates (Canva).

Lesson 3

[Pricing table] Compare the late addition of tax at checkout (Suno: beware) and emphasis on a first-month special price (Kling AI: beware) with Perplexity’s disclosures in Korea, and design screens that show the total price including VAT, consent 30 days in advance, and notice 7 days in advance.

Lesson 4

[Withdrawal from Purchase] Distinguish the three conditions for establishing the principle of partial refunds for unviewed portions of multi-session online courses and the restriction on withdrawal for single-purchase PDFs and template files (free sample + bold notice next to the button + separate checkbox).

Lesson 5

[Cancellation flow] Compare Typecast (downgrade and 4 clicks), ElevenLabs (31-minute equivalent and 30% discount with symmetrical 50:50 buttons), and Google Workspace (7 clicks + email-typing control group) to design a healthy retention modal.

Lesson 6

[Practical Application] Wrap up with a three-stage, 12-item self-audit routine you can complete in 15 minutes before launch, and learn how to use three prompts (P1–P3) to cross-check your on-screen copy with AI.

The Division of Roles Between Prompt Engineering and Humans

Prompt Engineering: Have an AI Auditor Review My Screen Text First

Three-Step Review Prompts (P1–P3) to Give AI Before Launching

If you vaguely ask AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.) to “write the terms of service,” they may omit legally required disclosures or simply translate English dark-pattern wording verbatim. Paste your screen draft into one of the three prompt-engineering templates (P1–P3) included in the course materials PDF, and you can identify and fix missing disclosures and asymmetric button wording in under a minute.

Tasks to be decided by people in service planning and operations

What AI Audit Prompts (P1–P3) Help With

Check signup fields and checkbox drafts for preselection risks and missing required disclosures (P1)
Revise the pricing table and text above the payment button to show the VAT-inclusive total and legally compliant cancellation terms (P2)
Remove high-friction elements from the cancellation flow and write copy for a balanced, 50:50 modal in a 4-click flow (P3)

Tasks for the service planner and operator to handle directly

Continuously display your business registration and mail-order business registration information at the bottom of the site
Create and publish an actual free preview sample before selling individual digital files
Send advance notifications before recurring billing begins or prices increase, and faithfully honor the agreed-upon refund policy.

What This Course Is Not

This course does not replace case-specific legal advice from a lawyer or representation in disputes before the Fair Trade Commission or courts, and it does not guarantee any particular conversion rate, sales, or revenue results. It also does not cover loopholes for cunningly evading legal regulations.

This UI design educational material was produced based on the original texts of current laws and guidance documents (cross-checked as of 2026년 10월 15일) and hands-on measurements of screens from 9 domestic and international services (as of 2026년 10월 18일). It does not make any determination as to whether any of the cited companies have violated the law. Since the details of how the rules apply may vary depending on legislative amendments or the structure of individual agreements, please consult a legal professional when reviewing unusual terms of service.

Account email addresses, payment identifiers, and subscription tokens shown on actual screens have been obscured with solid, opaque boxes. The lecture audio is AI-generated (TTS).

When your on-screen wording is confusing, check it this way.

Try having AI review it first by entering only the on-screen text—not customers’ personal information—into the prompts (P1~P3) in the class materials PDF.
Share any further questions or feedback on the signup, payment, or cancellation UI in the Q&A board and open chat room.
