Seth Godin's Masterclass: The Essence of Marketing

Even good products and content created with great effort often fail to move people's hearts. We invite you to a lecture that revisits the essence of marketing that moves people's hearts and actions.

Features of This Course

  • The mindset of 'marketers who design change'

Seth Godin defines marketing not as 'the art of selling,' but as intentional design that changes people. This course focuses on fundamental values such as brand philosophy, worldview, trust, and empathy rather than concentrating on short-term traffic increases or tactics.

  • Philosophical yet practical structure

Along with conceptual messages, we also cover practical tools that can be immediately applied in real-world situations, such as elevator pitches, funnel structures, pricing strategies, and storytelling.

  • Question-based structure + encouraging contemplation

"Who do you want to change?" "What promises do you make?" The content is structured around questions that encourage self-reflection, and each section includes assignments that promote deep learning.

🎯 Into the Lecture

① "The purpose of marketing is to create change"

"Marketers are not simply people who sell something. We are people who design change. Leading customers from their current state to a new state—that is the essence of marketing. It's not simply about converting non-customers into customers, but helping them transform into the person they want to become. Just as Harley Davidson transforms 'alienated outsiders' into 'beloved insiders,' we work with identity and belonging. That's why marketing is an act of intentionally intervening in the world and taking responsibility for the resulting outcomes."

② "You must become a purple cow."

"People don't react to familiar things. When a purple cow appears among thousands of brown cows, we pay attention and make it a topic of conversation. This is what remarkable means - 'worth talking about.' Marketing isn't about the product, but about the conversations that product creates. Being better or cheaper is no longer a competitive advantage. Can you make customers voluntarily talk about your brand? That's the core of marketing strategy. Purple cows aren't created by accident. They come from intentional design and courage."

③ "Tension is an emotion designed by marketers."

"Trust begins with tension. Customers always feel both fear and anticipation simultaneously about any change. Good marketers read this emotional gap and plant trust within it. Tension is uncomfortable, but it's the driving force for change. We shouldn't just provide customers with comfort. Instead, we should give them challenge and excitement, consistently sending the signal that 'this brand can be trusted.' Ultimately, marketing is the design of emotions, and it's about determining what emotions a brand is remembered by in customers' hearts."

📚 You'll learn this kind of content.

The essence of marketing is the perspective of 'change'

This course doesn't view marketing as simply a product sales technique. A marketer is defined as someone who influences people's identity and helps them transform into who they want to become. The moment you adopt this perspective, the direction and strategy of marketing changes completely. You can learn how to become a designer who creates 'change'.

Defining Persona and Worldview

"People like us do things like this." This lecture is based on this sentence and covers how to read the worldview and identity of target customers. People make choices based on worldview, not logic, and brands work when they provide a sense of 'alignment' with that worldview. You can understand what messages resonate with customers.

Understanding the Relationship Between Storytelling and Funnels

The customer journey is not simply awareness → purchase. The persuasion approach must differ at each stage, and the brand's story should also be designed to match that flow. In this course, you can learn specifically how storytelling plays a role within the funnel structure, builds trust, and drives action.

Balancing Branding vs Direct Marketing

Direct marketing is a practical strategy that gets immediate responses, while branding is an asset that builds long-term trust. These two are not conflicting concepts, but rather tools that should be appropriately mixed together. In this lecture, you can clearly understand how to distinguish between these two and which strategy is suitable at what point in time.

I'm an 8-year office worker who has been working as a marketer for 4 years. When I transitioned to a marketing role, Seth Godin's books were incredibly helpful. They completely changed my way of thinking! Many people have long recommended 'Seth Godin' like a bible... and being able to watch lectures by such a master on Inflearn is truly amazing and makes me feel how much better the world has become! The message isn't difficult but hits the core points, making you think. Am I really doing marketing as a marketer? Have I just been doing things the way I've always done them out of habit? Am I too buried in just intuition, or just numbers? It was a truly valuable lecture that allowed me to reflect on these questions! The Notion worksheet provided was also very helpful for organizing my thoughts while watching. There really isn't a lecture that Inflearn doesn't have..!!! Thank you for making it possible to listen to good lectures in Korean!!!

Beta Review) I read Seth Godin's Purple Cow and ended up taking the course as well. While some content was from the book, listening to the course made the material more concrete and clear! I've always felt somewhat frustrated and lacking while working in marketing, but the course felt like it scratched that itch. The missions and quizzes in between made it easy to review the content! Now all that's left is to apply it to my marketing 😊😊 It was a course where I gained many insights

[Trial Group Course Review] When performing work tasks, there are often times when I proceed based on inertia rather than remembering the essence of marketing, which can make me feel like I've lost direction at some point. While listening to Seth Godin's lecture, I was reminded once again that taking a moment to pause and think about who this marketing is for and what kind of impact it will have, before moving busily, is what leads strategies to success : ) I'm looking forward to the remaining detailed lectures as they seem like they'll be a time to deepen my knowledge about the essence of marketing even further!

(Trial Course Review) I truly realized that marketing isn't simply about promoting and selling products, but about moving people's hearts and behaviors. Rather than being swayed by trends or algorithms, I started thinking about what kind of change I want to create first. There was so much practical content that I could apply directly to my work, making it really beneficial, and it became a turning point that changed my entire attitude toward marketing going forward.
