I'm an 8-year office worker who has been working as a marketer for 4 years. When I transitioned to a marketing role, Seth Godin's books were incredibly helpful. They completely changed my way of thinking! Many people have long recommended 'Seth Godin' like a bible... and being able to watch lectures by such a master on Inflearn is truly amazing and makes me feel how much better the world has become! The message isn't difficult but hits the core points, making you think. Am I really doing marketing as a marketer? Have I just been doing things the way I've always done them out of habit? ① “The purpose of marketing is to create change”

“A marketer is not simply someone who sells something. We are designers of change. Leading customers from their current state to a new state—that is the essence of marketing. It is not just about turning non-customers into customers, but helping them transform into the people they want to become. Just as Harley-Davidson turns ‘alienated outsiders’ into ‘beloved insiders,’ we deal with identity and belonging. Therefore, marketing is the act of intervening in the world with intent and taking responsibility for the resulting consequences.”


② “You must become a purple cow.”

“People do not react to the familiar. When a single purple cow appears among thousands of brown cows, we take notice and talk about it. This is what it means to be ‘remarkable’—having the value of being worth talking about. Marketing is not about the product, but the conversation that product creates. Being better or cheaper is no longer a competitive advantage. Can you make customers talk about your brand voluntarily? That is the core of marketing strategy. A purple cow is not created by accident. It comes from intentional design and courage.”


③ “Tension is an emotion designed by marketers.”

“Trust begins with tension. Customers always feel fear and anticipation simultaneously regarding any change. A good marketer reads this emotional gap and plants trust within it. Tension is discomfort, but it is also the driving force for change. We must not provide customers with only comfort. Instead, we must offer challenge and excitement while consistently signaling that ‘this brand is trustworthy.’ Ultimately, marketing is the design of emotions, and the task of determining what kind of emotion a brand is remembered by in the customer's heart.”

            [Trial Group Course Review] When performing work tasks, there are often times when I proceed based on inertia rather than remembering the essence of marketing, which can make me feel like I've lost direction at some point. While listening to Seth Godin's lecture, I was reminded once again that taking a moment to pause and think about who this marketing is for and what kind of impact it will have, before moving busily, is what leads strategies to success : ) I'm looking forward to the remaining detailed lectures as they seem like they'll be a time to deepen my knowledge about the essence of marketing even further!
