Measuring DB limits with pre-event load testing — using k6 to find the point where the DB breaks first

If you’re told to “run a load test” before an event, use k6 to ramp up requests per second step by step while monitoring database metrics—CPU, active threads, connection pool, lock waits, buffer pool, and replication lag—all on one screen. Identify what breaks first, then set numerical thresholds for system limits and when to stop. Reproduce everything locally with Docker.

What you will gain after the course

  • We model the event traffic pattern (request rate, concentration on popular products, and the surge at opening) as a k6 scenario and apply load based on requests per second.

  • Apply a step load while monitoring the DB metrics on a single screen (CPU, active threads, connections, pool wait, lock wait, buffer hits, and replication lag).

  • Find the knee where throughput plateaus and latency starts climbing, then identify which of five areas saturated first: CPU, connections, locks, memory, or replication.

  • We use measurements to confirm how connection pool size, number of servers, and retries affect the database’s limits.

  • Set numerical limits, safety margins, and stop criteria, and automatically halt the test when any threshold is exceeded.

  • I’ll write a one-page results report and a pre-event checklist.

Who is this course right for?

  • Backend developers with 1–5 years of experience responsible for load testing ahead of events and sales

  • Junior DBAs and SREs who need to interpret load test results from the database side

  • For those who got the numbers with k6 but don’t know what needs fixing.

Need to know before starting?

  • SQL Basics Such as SELECT and Indexes

  • Experience running containers with Docker (allocating 4 CPUs and at least 6 GB of memory to Docker is recommended)

A data craftsman with over 20 years of experience in databases and IT. As a DBA and manager of a DB Platform team, I work with database platforms and specialize in MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, MongoDB, SQL tuning, AWS, Terraform, and Python. Drawing on experience in the gaming, finance, and IT services industries, I explain database and cloud architecture. I have published 『Oracle Practical Tuning: Learning SQL Patterns』 and 『Oracle Pro*C Practical Project Guide』, and have presented on serverless architectures, database selection, and multi-database strategies at AWS Summit 2018 and 2019 and DataYa Nolja 2020. Recently, I have been working on slow-query analysis and tuning recommendations using Bedrock LLM, automated DB specification sizing, and query workflows through a DB metadata MCP server and Slack bot. I explain database automation for developers and AI applications for non-developers through hands-on exercises tailored to the audience and objectives of each course. Rather than applying AI suggestions as-is, I teach a decision-making framework that verifies result equivalence, execution plans, and observability conditions, and defers action when the supporting evidence is insufficient. Company operational data and credentials are not included in the course materials.
