Course Introduction

You type an address into the address bar and press enter. The screen appears. It took about 0.5 seconds.

What exactly happened during those 0.5 seconds?

The browser broke down and interpreted the address, searched three different locations to see if it already had the data, and since it didn't, went through four steps to ask for the IP address. Then, after exchanging greetings with the server three times, it verified the certificate, created an encryption key, and only then finally sent the request.

The request passed through routers and firewalls, went through a load balancer to reach the server, and moved from the web server to the WAS, then from the WAS to the database before returning. The browser received that text, read its structure, applied styles, calculated positions, and rendered it on the screen, all while requesting necessary images and files dozens more times.

All of this happens in 0.5 seconds.

This lecture follows that journey from start to finish. However, the goal is not to memorize the process.

Within this journey, the terms learned in Lesson 1, the computer architecture from Lesson 2, and the job roles from Lesson 3 are all included. Things that were learned separately come together as one here. That is the purpose of this lecture, which concludes the Level 1 basics.
