As a product designer in New York
This is Eric, who is active. 👋

I am currently working as a Senior Product Designer at The Knot Worldwide , focusing on discovering and solving user problems related to weddings and parties . As a product designer, I have ownership of the UX/UI design process, from planning to user research and design output production.

Now, I am a UX/UI design practitioner and I work as an interviewer to verify applicants, but I also used to be a job seeker and prepared for a UX/UI design job, and after much trial and error, I was able to get a job. In other words, I have experience as both an interviewer and a job seeker. So, when preparing for employment, I know very well about the things that are very important from the interviewer's perspective, but easy for the job seeker to miss.

Understand the UX/UI interviewer's perspective
I used user research
The story of how I was able to increase my employment success rate by more than 3 times
🙌

When I was preparing for a job as a product designer, I didn't know how to utilize user research in the process of solving problems in UX/UI design projects, and I also didn't know how to show it in my portfolio. Because of this, I experienced deep frustration when I couldn't even pass the first round of designer job applications and couldn't even attend an interview. 😔 After continuously analyzing the reasons for my failure, I realized that from the interviewer's perspective, they consider not only the applicant's idea visualization ability but also their user research utilization ability to be very important. In particular, they realized that they value and evaluate whether or not the applicant knows how to utilize it in the way required in the field.

From an interviewer's perspective, one of the most important things they look for when hiring a UX/UI designer is problem-solving skills. To achieve this, you must know how to properly utilize user research to directly hear and confirm feedback from users, and have experience utilizing it. In other words, from the interviewer's perspective, applicants must be able to show how they solved problems in UX/UI design projects by utilizing user research. After knowing this, I proceeded with the project again and significantly revised the way I composed my portfolio. This allowed me to increase my rate of passing the first round of employment by three times (or more 😮 ), and ultimately, I was able to receive job offers from several companies.

In this class, I will share with you all the know-how that helped me overcome the trial and error I experienced, and also the perspectives I learned after becoming an interviewer. That is why I created this class to help students achieve their UX/UI design career goals by utilizing user research.

💡 I'll guide you to reach your goals.

I will tell you from A to Z how to conduct typical user research techniques such as one-on-one in-depth user interviews and usability tests from a practitioner's perspective. Based on my own trial and error, job search experience, and experience as an interviewer, I will help you conduct user research that meets the interviewer's expectations.

What will I get from this course? 🤔

1. Basic knowledge of user research

  • Basic concepts of user research
  • Why User Research for UX/UI Design?
  • One-on-one in-depth interviews, principles of usability testing

2. Understanding the core UX/UI competencies needed for successful employment

  • What UX/UI job seekers need from an interviewer's perspective
  • How to become a competitive candidate

3. Practical one-on-one in-depth interview skills - Understand your users and discover the problems they are experiencing.

  • How to Use One-on-One In-Depth Interviews in Practice
  • Practice one-on-one in-depth interviews by identifying topics through real-life cases

4. Practical usability testing skills - verifying the effectiveness of ideas and designs and discovering areas for improvement

  • Verifying the effectiveness of a product through usability testing
  • How to identify project topics, write a plan, perform tasks and questionnaires, and write a script

5. How to synthesize insights and set next steps

  • How to analyze and synthesize insights after completing user research activities
  • Define the problem and users you want to target

Why one-on-one interviews?
Is this a usability test? 💁‍♀️

"The UX/UI project you've worked on actually benefits the users.
How do you prove that it works?🤔 "

This is a question that many interviewers may ask after looking at your UX/UI portfolio. How would you answer this question if you have no work experience? If you are in a company, you can objectively determine how the UX/UI you created is helpful to users or not through statistical data such as analytics data. However, it is difficult for a job seeker who has just entered the workforce to do so. However, there is a way. This is because there are one-on-one interviews and usability tests.

#1
Appealing to the interviewer
Powerful user research techniques

Using one-on-one interviews and usability testing can help you uncover meaningful signals that can inform decision-making, even if they aren’t statistical data. This can help you uncover problems users are experiencing, determine if you can test a solution, and ultimately make you an attractive candidate to interviewers.

#2
For UX/UI design experts
Essential Skills

Companies want UX/UI design professionals to be on the front lines of their users. So the ability to gain insights through one-on-one interviews and usability testing, that is, the ability to obtain qualitative user data, is a skill that companies absolutely require from UX/UI design professionals.

Don't expect this. 🙅🏻‍♂️

One-on-one interviews and usability
Testing is omnipotent
Just try it once
The desired results will be achieved.

To the already decided answer
To fit the basis
User research
It will be useful.

If you don't practice directly,
Even if you practice just once or twice
I am also an expert
It could be possible.

👉 All user research, including one-on-one interviews and usability tests, is not something that can be done once and finished, but rather, based on what is learned through it, it may be necessary to improve the current user experience and continuously repeat experiments. In other words, it is a mistake to hope that everything will be done at once or to think that you can become an expert right away. Also, user research should not be done to fit a set answer, but should focus on fundamentally understanding users and their actual problems. This course provides guidelines on how to utilize user research to focus on the essence, continuously experiment, learn, and provide better experiences to users.

I recommend this to these people 💚

Q&A 💬

Q. Is this a lecture that non-majors can also take?

Yes, this course is designed for non-majors and beginners. If you have a desire to deeply understand users and a desire to 'really' discover and solve problems that users experience, then user research can be done by anyone, regardless of their major.

Q. To what extent will I be able to develop user research skills after taking the class?

This course aims to help students learn about two user research techniques: one-on-one in-depth interviews and usability testing, and to help them develop the ability to do them themselves. It covers everything from planning a user research project, asking the right questions and requesting tasks, conducting research, and tips for recruiting users, so you can do it yourself. And as I emphasize several times in the course, the most important thing is that students can only acquire this ability if they practice what is guided in the course. There is a separate video that guides you on how to do the practice, so please follow the guide and practice!

Q. Are there any prerequisite courses I need to take before taking this class?

If you are aiming for employment or are new to UX design, I recommend that you take' Introduction to UX Design ' and' UI Design from Introduction to Practice using Figma ' that I opened on Inflearn as prerequisite courses. You can take the user research course even if you don't take these two courses. However, I recommend them because they can create much more synergy in designing a career roadmap, so I think it would be good to refer to them. For more information, please watch ' [Free Public Video] Career Roadmap to Become a UX/UI Designer and Guide to Prerequisite Courses' .

Q. Will taking this class help me create a portfolio?

User research is a core skill needed to create a portfolio that appeals to interviewers. In other words, it is a skill that you need to have to create a good portfolio, so it can be said that this class is helpful before creating a portfolio. And for the detailed creation of the portfolio and the review of the portfolio, I provide feedback and help to the students through 1:1 mentoring, so if you are interested, please apply for mentoring or contact ericworld121@gmail.com.

I took Eric's lectures in a row, from Introduction to UX Design, UI Design Using Figma, to Research. I haven't completed many other online lectures, but I've continued to complete Eric's lectures. I'm leaving a review because I think it might be helpful for those who are considering taking the research lecture. First of all, as mentioned at the beginning of the lecture, this lecture focuses on the content that beginners in UX/UI absolutely need to know. It consists of basic information related to research, such as why research should be done and how beginners can approach it. The advantages of Eric's lectures in my opinion are: 1. I feel that the lecture content was organized after much thought about what information beginners need. Since important content is repeated several times, there is almost no missing part, and since he organized and shared Q&A questions that other beginners asked, many of my questions were resolved. 2. Based on his experience as a practitioner and interviewer, he points out the core competencies that companies want. Based on actual job postings, I think it will definitely be helpful for those who are thinking about getting a job in UX/UI, such as telling you how the interviewer and the company want the skills to match. 3. You share the data from your actual research, and by explaining step-by-step from the beginning, you teach research methods that you can try right away. In addition to the lecture content, I think I continued to listen to Eric's lectures because I could feel that he sincerely wanted the students to do well. However, since the content of this research lecture is so important, the part about why you need to do research in the beginning is somewhat repetitive. This part was a little disappointing, but I think it was because I tried to listen to the lecture quickly. In conclusion, the quality of the lectures is so great while working in the field, so I think I am learning not only UX/UI content but also attitudes toward life. I am grateful in many ways, and I would like to recommend the lecture to others.

Cloe, thank you for your sincere review. I appreciate you pointing out the points that I thought about while creating the course and how I could help the students. I think user research is a very important skill for getting a job at a company and becoming a UX/UI designer and product designer who is recognized by the company. So I think the points that Cloe pointed out will be helpful to prospective students before choosing this course. I am so happy and rewarded if I could help you even a little through this course. By the way, Cloe is the first student to have taken all three courses that I opened in Inflearn. I think it was possible because she had the ability to execute, and I believe that she will quickly achieve her goals in the future. I will support you deeply.

This lecture was easy and quick to understand and apply thanks to the systematically organized content and various class materials. I prefer to study by saving each lecture note separately on my laptop without using Inflearn lecture notes. While taking this lecture, I studied by drawing along with the visual materials such as the design process and comparison of corporate development methods, which were not provided separately as class materials. I think the learning efficiency would be higher if visual materials of important content were also provided as class materials. Thank you for providing a good lecture.

The lecture was very well organized, so I was able to concentrate well and it was really helpful. I finished it quickly. If there are people who are thinking about taking the lecture, I would definitely recommend taking it for the following reasons. 1. Differentiation from existing lectures - Existing lectures were focused on UI, which was disappointing, but this was the only lecture where I could learn deep about UX. - “More than anything,” after taking the existing lectures, I was at a loss about what to do next, but now it’s really clear what I need to do because it covers step-by-step processes, portfolios, designs, and plans! 2. High quality and detail of the lectures - It was a great help in figuring out what to do next because it continuously covered the overall flow/process. - I was able to understand the lecture content “without missing anything,” from the big background to detailed elements and frequently asked questions. - Also, it covered the necessity of user research, which was very helpful in acquiring knowledge. 3. Honest lectures - I have taken many online lectures, but Eric's lectures were the most helpful and helpful to me because he really cares about his students. The life lectures he gave me here and there also motivated me. - Since you can continue with mentoring as needed after taking all the lectures, I think this is a lecture that will allow you to continuously develop your abilities. - I am grateful that I can take such a useful and high-quality lecture at a reasonable price! I think this is such a useful lecture that it could be a turning point in learning UX! Thank you so much :)

Thank you for your detailed feedback. After reading the feedback, I think there are many points that I want students to take away from this lecture. I think you have used the lecture more than 200%. If I could be of any help, it would be my greatest joy. I sincerely hope that you achieve everything you want to do in the future.

I couldn't stop listening and ended up completing 80% in just 2 days! I think this is the first time I've gone through a lecture this quickly. This lecture makes you want to quickly apply what you've learned to actual work. When I heard that user research needed to be done, it felt vague and difficult to start, but Eric shared the guides he actually used and even real interview content, so there's no burden in moving straight to practice. I'll take time to slowly go through the remaining useful content about career and portfolio. Thank you for creating such a great lecture.
