Data Analyst Application Rejected? I'll Tell You About Portfolios That Work

Trying to get a job, but it's not easy, is it? I, a liberal arts non-major and academy graduate, will share the 'effective portfolio' that I personally struggled for 'n' months to widely open the door to employment.

What you will gain after the course

  • I can find out what a "successful portfolio" is for new Data Analyst applicants.

  • Non-Major Portfolio: Fast Employment Method

  • Data Analyst Technical Interview Prep

Is the job of "data analyst" just a fantasy for non-majors with liberal arts degrees and academy degrees? 🤔

I entered the data analyst job market at the age of 31 and got a job , so it's not an illusion!

When I entered the job market, my specs were like this 😑

College? Just graduated with a liberal arts degree.

Post-graduation experience? Four years of liberal arts and office work (virtually nothing, not even close to being a data engineer...)

Data analysis training? 6 months at a government-funded academy.

When I said I was going to suddenly change my job from an office job to a data analyst, everyone around me said the same thing.

💭 "Changing careers after 30? It's tough, you're old."

💭 "They say you can't get a job without a master's degree. It'll be hard just to get through the application process."

But I just did it because,

"Oh, because I want to be a data analyst!"

<But after failing to get a job>

I eagerly declared my intentions and submitted my documents to nearly 40 places, but only got a word of acceptance from two. (And even those were a bit odd...)

(I only brought the Wanted details.. Support for other platforms before May was also a slog.. ^^ Really..)

I want to be a data analyst

I told my parents and all my acquaintances and friends, but including the period of attending the academy (6 months) and the period of document theft (3 months), I spent a long time as a depressed unemployed person. 😥

At this time , I was walking around the neighborhood to relieve my depression, but around the time I got off work, my friends' group chat kept talking about work and the company.

And then when I came into the room, I'd think, 'What am I doing...?' and get depressed again. This pattern repeated itself. (I also got nervous gastritis around this time... haha 😂 )

After graduating from the academy, I was depressed every single day during the period when I couldn't even pass the document screening.

"What the hell is the problem.."

Because I spent 2-3 months in this state,

I had a strong feeling that it wasn't just the specs that were causing this problem.

I wonder if the portfolio doesn't show the message , "I'm a non-major and a graduate of an academy, but if you hire me, I can do 'this much'." All I have to show is my portfolio... 😯

Because I kept thinking like this.

Anyway, I need to revise my portfolio, but I can't seem to get the hang of it.

But I can't stop,

I keep looking at well-made data analysis materials from overseas sites.

I got some hints by looking at the pattern of their analysis articles.

As soon as I realized it, I immediately applied it to my portfolio.

Once I felt confident in my portfolio, I selected about 10 places I wanted to go and added them to it, and over 90% of them passed the document screening.

<After portfolio change>

It's been quite some time since I passed, so I've only brought what's left on my phone and email. I haven't blinded any of the companies you might know or that are large.

<So, a successful job search story>

The reason I, who had nothing to show for my qualifications, was able to successfully transition to a data analyst position in the science and IT field was because I deeply realized the importance of a "portfolio."

At first, I was bewildered by the news of document screening that kept coming in,

Later, as I looked at the portfolios of new applicants to our company and when I was advising non-major data analysts on their portfolios, I gradually became more convinced that the method I had discovered was correct.

The reason why I was practically without a job for 2-3 months

We concluded on our own that it was because we were presented with a portfolio that could not be evaluated .

Me too, just like everyone else

Even though I submitted a portfolio with the following structure: data analysis goal -> preprocessing -> visualization -> machine learning modeling -> conclusion, I was robbed.

The composition of the portfolios that passed and the portfolios that failed were similar, but the problems were in completely different places.

There is a clear distinction between portfolios that can be evaluated and portfolios that cannot be evaluated .

So I'm sharing this tip with you.

First, a portfolio that can be evaluated

Second, a portfolio that can be well- evaluated

This course is more geared towards non-major job seekers.

📢 Why non-majors should take this course.

  • I review applications for entry-level data analysts and provide portfolio advice to non-majors in large online communities. I'm proud to say I've seen over 300 portfolios from new data analysts.

  • Typically, data analyst portfolios are similar. Only one in a thousand stands out, and the rest are unassessable portfolios. Simply put, they're all similar.

  • If the portfolios are all the same value, we hire those with a major that gives them extra points in terms of specifications.

  • So, non-majors with relatively weak qualifications have to compete with others by presenting a "portfolio that can be evaluated" in order to get a job!

This lecture is not difficult at all. 😎

This isn't a lecture about how to make machine learning more efficient or how to improve accuracy.

So, anyone preparing for a job as a data analyst can listen to this.

Additionally, we will provide interview tips after you pass the document screening!

The reason I am offering this course at this price is,

I previously ran a free portfolio consulting blog for data analyst job seekers for three or four years. After they landed jobs, they often gave me coffee gift cards as a token of their appreciation. So, that's roughly the price. 😊... (Taking into account the commission fee paid to Inflearn...() )

But, these people should not take this lecture

  • For those interested in pursuing a career as a data analyst. (This course is for those who already understand data analysis and are determined to start as a data analyst. This course is not designed to spark interest in the profession.)

  • Those who have already passed the document screening process three or more times using their own portfolio. (You don't need to listen to this, as you have already passed the screening process yourself.)

  • For those who haven't studied any data analysis language at all. (You should at least know what machine learning is.)

  • Data analysis job seekers in fields other than machine learning (this course emphasizes machine learning)

I recommend this to these people

I'm not a major so I'm not confident

I want to become a data analyst
People around me just say, "No."

I don't know what's wrong
I made a portfolio, but it gets stolen as soon as I submit it.
There is no chance of an interview.

I'm so lost about preparing my portfolio.
This is my first time working in IT,
I have no idea how to create a portfolio.

After class

  • You can see what kind of portfolio the recruiter is looking for.

  • Even if you don't make it, you can at least know what a "valuable" portfolio is.

  • As a non-major, I can learn how to respond to questions I might be asked in an interview.

Player knowledge

  • Basic programming grammar knowledge ( Python , SQL )

  • Simple knowledge of how to run machine learning

In a broad sense, it is data analysis, but I think it's a course closer to a data scientist portfolio focused on modeling rather than an analyst. In my case, since I hope to go into data analysis/growth, and because I conducted projects mainly focused on problem definition/hypotheses/validation/BI visualization, it's difficult to apply, which is a pity.

Oh 😭😭 I see.. I am also disappointed and sorry that it ended up being a lecture that the student found disappointing. To let people know it's a lecture that at least deals with machine learning, I did state 'basic knowledge of how to run machine learning' in the <Prerequisite Knowledge> description, but it seems this part wasn't clearly emphasized. I will reflect your feedback and emphasize it more. If there are any parts where you need additional mentoring while taking the lecture, please feel free to leave a reply, and I will provide it. Thank you very much for your feedback!

It was a special lecture on portfolio building for excellent Data Scientists, and for those preparing not just for Data Scientist but also Data Analyst roles, it was an incredibly cost-effective lecture where, for the price of coffee, you could grasp what a current professional considers a well-crafted portfolio. Personally, I'd like to send an email and have a coffee chat with the instructor... Is there no way to find out their email address...

I'm glad my lecture was helpful to 박재완님, and thank you for your heartfelt course review! 😁 Currently, due to personal commitments, I cannot do coffee chats. However, if there's anything you need help with, we can communicate via email. But if I leave my email address here, I might receive random mentoring requests. So, if you leave your email address here, I will contact you via email when I have time! (You can delete your email address later)
