“Read the numbers, and you’ll see the company.”

Being able to read financial statements is different from properly understanding a company. In the intermediate course, building on the accounting fundamentals learned in the introductory course, you will learn how to comprehensively analyze the balance sheet, income statement, statement of cash flows, statement of changes in equity, and notes, and how to uncover a company’s actual operating performance and risk factors hidden behind the numbers. First, rather than taking the numbers in the financial statements at face value, you will explore why a company may be profitable yet short of cash, why its financial condition may deteriorate even as profits increase, and why its actual profitability may decline despite growing sales. You will then analyze key financial ratios and trends—including liquidity, solvency, profitability, and activity—to diagnose a company’s true financial health and warning signs. You will also analyze profitability by product and customer, which is more important than sales volume alone, along with contribution margin, break-even points, and the relationship between price and sales volume, to identify which businesses are actually generating profits. Furthermore, through key company valuation metrics such as PER, PBR, and EV/EBITDA, you will understand “What determines the value of our company?” and examine the key factors that increase corporate value. Finally, you will develop decision-making skills based on evidence rather than intuition by analyzing, with numbers, real-world management issues such as outsourcing versus in-house production, whether to continue offering a product, pricing policies, and new investments.

What you will gain after the course

  • The ability to read financial statements and assess a company’s true condition

  • The ability to assess a company’s risk and profitability through numbers

  • The ability to identify products, customers, and businesses that truly make money

  • The ability to make management decisions based on numbers

「Reading the Numbers Reveals the Company」** goes beyond basic accounting concepts to offer a practical course that interprets the meaning of the numbers in financial statements and diagnoses a company’s actual management condition.

Financial statements are not simply a collection of numbers. Changes in the numbers reveal a company’s profit structure, cash flow, financial risks, management performance, and future potential.

In this course, you will comprehensively analyze the balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement, statement of changes in equity, and notes, and use financial ratios and trends to identify signals that a company may appear financially sound on the surface but actually be at risk.

Additionally, rather than focusing solely on sales volume, you will analyze contribution margin, break-even point, profitability by product, and the relationship between price and sales volume to identify the products, customers, and businesses that actually generate money for the company.

Furthermore, you will understand key corporate valuation metrics such as PER, PBR, and EV/EBITDA, and examine what determines a company's value and which numbers you need to manage to increase it.

Finally, you will analyze real-world management issues—such as in-house production versus outsourcing, pricing decisions, product retention or withdrawal, and investment in new businesses—using numbers to develop the ability to make management decisions based on data rather than “gut feeling”.

The Core of This Course

Read financial statements → identify anomalies in the numbers → analyze the profit structure → assess the company’s value → make management decisions.

Ultimately, this course is about growing into someone who goes beyond being able to read financial statements to discovering a company's problems and opportunities within the numbers and finding solutions for managing the business.
