Hands-On AWS CloudFormation: Building Web Service Infrastructure with Code

Build a WordPress 3-tier infrastructure from VPC to HTTPS in 8 steps using YAML templates instead of console clicks. Starting with an empty AWS account, this hands-on course builds security groups, RDS, EC2, ALB, and Route53 layer by layer, culminating in a reusable set of templates. Develop practical IaC skills, from template syntax and passing values between stacks to safe deletion order.

What you will gain after the course

  • Creation and deployment of a WordPress 3-tier infrastructure template including VPC, IAM, RDS, EC2, ALB, and Route53

  • Understanding and Applying CloudFormation Intrinsic Functions (!Sub, !Ref, etc.) and Patterns for Passing Values Between Stacks

  • Establishing the Correct Deletion Order and Managing Stacks Through Resource Dependency Analysis

🤔 Have you ever experienced this?

To launch a single server in the AWS Console, you click dozens of times to create a VPC, divide it into subnets, open security groups, and attach a database. After spending half a day finally completing it, you try to create the exact same environment again a few days later and find yourself starting over, wondering, "Where was that checkbox I clicked back then?"

After the hands-on practice, you delete the resources because you’re worried about the charges, but not knowing what to delete or in what order means that a few quietly remain and the billing continues. Even when you find and open a template, it can be difficult to understand what each line in it actually does.

This course puts an end to that very repetition and anxiety through declaring infrastructure as code.

📌 This is how the course is conducted

This is not a course that ends with simply listening to concepts. It is a hands-on course where you follow along in the AWS console exactly as the instructor does and complete a working WordPress site yourself. That’s why we have clearly separated the roles of the materials.

  • 📝 Read and understand the concepts in the class notes (textbook). They cover how CloudFormation works, template syntax (Parameters·Resources·Outputs), built-in functions such as !Ref, !Sub, and Fn::ImportValue, as well as detailed, line-by-line explanations and checklists for each template. They serve as a reference you can search later.

  • 🎬 Follow along directly with hands-on course videos. You will build the final product by following every step from start to finish: creating a stack in the console, entering values, and deploying.

✨ Why this course is special

“Dual learning”: follow along with the videos and review with the class notes

Unlike courses that only have videos, we also provide class notes that are easy to reference. Follow along with the exercises in the video, then review principles in the notes, such as "why there are six subnets,", "Fn::Select and Fn::GetAZs choose availability zones". The notes clearly fill in what the video leaves behind.

From an empty account to an HTTPS site, one complete end product

These are not scattered examples. Starting from an empty account, you will build a single WordPress infrastructure called onblog-product, layer by layer: network → permissions → firewall → database → web server → load balancer → domain and HTTPS. By the end, a real site with the lock (🔒) enabled will be up and running.

"Once you know the order in which things were built, you can see the order in which to delete them"

Resources depend on one another. Security groups rely on the VPC, databases on subnets, and load balancers on servers. Once you understand this dependency order, the deployment order becomes clear—and reversing that order gives you a safe deletion order. You’ll also learn how to clean everything up neatly without worrying about charges.

🚀 Now, let’s open a blank console and get started

You’ll never again be lost wondering, "What did I click back then?" By the end of this course, the invisible cloud infrastructure will be transformed into a tangible form: code. Follow along with the videos, review with the notes, and see your working WordPress site through to the end.
