This course covers how to get a free Linux server and how to use and leverage it.
Run a free Linux server for student assignments, portfolio distribution, labs, small test servers, and MVP development.
On AWS, the equivalent instance price of an EC2 t2.micro (1 vCPU, 1 GB of memory) costs approximately 10,800 won per month. (USD 0.0116 * 24 hours * 30 days * 1,300 won) However, Oracle Cloud provides two EC2 instances with the equivalent specifications for free for life . Oracle Cloud provides computing power worth 20,000 won per month for free, which is 240,000 won per year.
For developers, a Linux server is essential. You'll use Linux in a variety of situations, from completing assignments and distributing portfolios for job applications to conducting internships. Furthermore, for small businesses and individuals, free Linux servers are a huge help when setting up test servers or building MVPs.
I was using a web service as an RDS MySQL DB server on AWS, and the DB server alone cost me about 24,000 won per month. The cost burden was so high that I migrated to GCP, where I used it free for three months. After that, I was billed about 18,000 won per month. Then I discovered Oracle Cloud and installed a MySQL server on an instance, ultimately saving me 18,000 won per month (216,000 won per year).
If you're running a service with low traffic, there's no need to use an expensive DB server. You can save money by installing MySQL on a free instance after testing. Furthermore, I was using AWS for a load balancer (KRW 20,000 per month), ECS (KRW 13,000 per month), CloudWatch (KRW 12,000 per month), and Secret Manager (KRW 5,000 per month). By using Nginx and Oracle Cloud, I was able to reduce my monthly expenses by KRW 50,000-60,000, easing the financial burden.
Of course, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure all offer free tiers for less than a year. However, one year is far from enough to fully utilize the service. On the other hand, Oracle Cloud, as a latecomer, offers groundbreaking services. However, like all cloud companies, registration requires an email address and a credit card.
The free Linux server runs Ubuntu on Oracle Cloud, and Termius and VSCode are used as remote access tools. This course covers how to build a server with NodeJS, MySQL, Nginx, and HTTPS, and then deploy the backend of the Saju Manse Calendar service. Additionally, it covers fundamental backend concepts such as HTTP communication, JWT authentication, database design, and API design.
Is this perhaps my story?
So, you can do things like this.
Oracle Cloud - Create an Instance
Termius - SSH remote access
VSCode - remote SSH
Building and deploying Node.js, MySQL, Nginx, and HTTPS servers - Saju Manse Calendar backend
Who is this course right for?
College students who need Linux for development practice or assignments
Job seekers who need a place to distribute their portfolios
Developers who need to build a test server or MVP server
