From developer to manager? It's daunting and challenging, isn't it?
Please complete the lecture and let's share your concerns through mentoring together!

Hello everyone. This is Jeong Chae-sang 🙂

I 've been a developer in the broad sense of the word for over 25 years . I started as a junior engineer at a Korean venture company, then worked at a global company called Telecar and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). After joining Google in 2007, I worked at both Google headquarters in Korea and the US for about 13 years . I started as a software engineer and later served as a tech lead and people manager at Google .

Afterwards, he worked at Samsung Semiconductor Research Institute in the U.S., and since 2022, he has been working as a senior management officer at Banksalad in Korea as a technical director , and has also taught students at KAIST Graduate School of Management, and continues to play various roles in the field.

Among my many experiences, in this lecture, I'd like to share what I learned and experienced while working in managerial and leadership roles. As this was a new challenge, I had many concerns, but I've gathered the information based on what I wish someone around me had said to me at the time.

From Senior Developer to Manager!

Entering

After I started creating work, excelled at it, and was recognized as a senior engineer, I began to contemplate what challenges and growth opportunities might lie ahead. Working in a team, I was given more roles to share the work with my colleagues, aligning them with my own goals. The days of pure development were over, and the need to gain more exposure to the world was both challenging and a little daunting.

When I took a moment to reflect, I realized it was akin to keeping up with the technological advancements around me, and that as I grew older, I became a slightly different person. It also occurred to me that when I first learned about computers, there wasn't even an internet. I was grateful for the opportunity to be in the midst of such a turbulent time, and I wanted to share a few moments with the younger generation who will continue to learn and create new technologies for decades to come.

What is a manager?

When a manager enters a role or job such as Engineering Manager, Project Manager, Product Manager, etc., the achievements of 00 in front of Manager become of great value.
For example, for a People Manager, the happiness and performance of his or her team members are of utmost concern.

This lecture was created with a focus on senior developers becoming managers, but you will also see the virtues of managers and the general flow of what needs to be done. :)

Section 1. The Flower of the Organization - The Manager's Job

What are some of the big themes?

(1) What a manager does

As organizations grow in size, the role of managers becomes increasingly crucial for the organization to thrive. Many of you will be directly or indirectly responsible for this role. Let's talk about what you expect from working with colleagues.

(2) Evaluate

We'll summarize the most important part of a manager's job as evaluating others, going beyond simply assigning grades. This is the most crucial role: to foster mutual growth. We'll discuss the concerns and issues to be addressed in each process.

(3) Good habits

What are some good habits to develop as a manager? We share our experiences on delegating, surviving in an organization, and managing your time effectively.

(4) Similar cases

By talking with people from various companies, I was able to think about similar cases together. We shared similar concerns and discussed the things we discussed together.

How did you put the content together?

After over 15 years in the field, working as a manager after being a developer, I've gathered together the training I received, my practical experiences, and the stories I've shared with colleagues and seniors who have shared their concerns. As a manager, I've compiled the things my hard-working friends needed, memories I wasn't able to provide, and ideas I'd like to share with new managers. I've also compiled this list with the intention of imparting them to them.

I recommend this to these people!

Challenges after becoming a senior developer
People with many worries

From a Korean and American developer perspective
For those curious about the role of a manager

Teamwork and communication skills
Senior developers who want to improve

Will taking this course make a difference?

I hope you can mentally prepare for the experiences you're experiencing now or will experience in the future. And I hope you won't hesitate to take on a little more courage. I hope you embrace your role with a positive sense of anticipation, reflecting the company's expectations, and that you can learn from your colleagues and share their shared experiences as you focus on achieving results.

I have a question!

Q. I purchased a course. Where can I find the mentoring coupon?

If the course progresses to 100%, a coupon for 1:1 mentoring will be issued .
Please check whether mentoring has been issued through ‘KakaoTalk notification’ .

Q. Where can I apply for mentoring?

You can apply for the mentoring voucher by applying it to the ‘Available Coupons’ in the mentoring link .

Q. Is there an expiration date for mentoring coupons?

The mentoring coupon is valid for [1 year].
When the progress rate reaches 100%, a mentoring coupon will be issued, and the coupon will be valid for one year from the date of issuance.

Q. How is this different from the previous lecture, “Growing into a Senior Developer”?

The course, "Growing into a Senior Developer," covers how to grow from a junior or mid-level developer to a more senior developer. While the course does cover communication skills and team management, it doesn't address managerial skills.

This lecture will cover what a manager does and what skills they can develop from a manager's perspective. I think this lecture will be a great introduction for those transitioning from developer to manager or those just starting out in management.
