Nice to meet you all. I'm Chaesang Jeong 🙂

I have been working as a developer in a broad sense for over 25 years. I started as a junior engineer at a Korean venture company, worked at a global company called Teleca and the ETRI research institute, and then joined Google's expansion into Korea in 2007, working at both Google Korea and the U.S. headquarters for about 13 years. I began as a software engineer and later served as a tech lead and people manager at Google.

Afterward, I worked at Samsung Semiconductor's research center in the U.S., and since 2022, I have been serving as the Technical Director at Banksalad in Korea, performing senior management roles, while also teaching students at the KAIST College of Business and continuing to take on various roles in the field.

Among my various experiences, in this lecture, I would like to share what I learned and experienced while serving in manager and leadership roles. Since it was a new challenge, I had many concerns, but I have gathered content centered around the things I wish someone had told me at that time.

From Senior Developer to Manager!

Introduction

After becoming recognized as a senior engineer by taking initiative and performing well, I began to wonder what the next opportunities for challenge and growth would be. As I worked within a team, roles were assigned where more colleagues shared the work in the same direction as I did. The days of so-called "pure development" were over, and having to experience more of the world was both challenging and a bit daunting.

Looking back, I realized it is similar to keeping up with the advancement of technology around us and akin to changing into a slightly different person as we age; I even thought about how there was no internet when I first learned to use a computer. I felt grateful to have had opportunities in the midst of such upheaval, and I wanted to share a few words with the juniors who will continue to learn and create with new technologies for decades to come.

What is a Manager?

When a role or job title includes "Manager," such as Engineering Manager, Project Manager, or Product Manager, the performance of the "XX" preceding "Manager" becomes of great value.
For example, in the case of a People Manager, the happiness and performance of team members become the primary concern.

Although this course was created with a focus on transitioning from a senior developer to a manager, you will also be able to see the general virtues of a manager and the overall flow of their responsibilities :)

Section 1. The Flower of the Organization - The Work of a Manager

What are some of the major themes?

(1) What a Manager Does

As the scale grows, the role of managers becomes crucial for an organization to exert its strength. You will likely take on managerial roles either directly or indirectly, and we will discuss what to expect when working together with colleagues.

(2) Evaluation

We define evaluation as the most important part of a manager's job—a crucial role that goes beyond simply assigning scores to drive mutual growth. We will discuss what concerns and issues to share during each stage of the process.

(3) Good Habits

What are some good habits to have when taking on a managerial role? We will share experiences regarding delegating, surviving in an organization, and managing time effectively.

(4) Similar cases

Through conversations with people from various companies, I was able to contemplate similar cases together. I am sharing the details of the discussions we had while addressing these common concerns.

How did you put the content together?

Having spent over 15 years in the field as a manager following my career as a developer, I have gathered the training I received regarding challenges after the senior developer level, my hands-on experiences, and the conversations I've shared with colleagues, seniors, and juniors. I have organized the things that hardworking teammates needed, the memories of things I couldn't quite help with at the time, and the topics I would want to teach a newly hired manager.

I recommend it to these types of people!

Those who have many
concerns about the challenges after becoming a senior developer

Those who are curious about the role of a manager
from the perspective of developers in Korea and the US

Senior developers who want to improve their
teamwork and communication skills

Will things change if I take this course?

I hope this allows you to mentally prepare for the experiences you are currently facing or those yet to come. I also hope you will not hesitate to muster a little more courage. I want you to accept your role with a sense of "good tension" that reflects the company's expectations, and I hope the lessons learned from others' experiences and a sense of shared empathy will help you focus on achieving results together with your colleagues.

I have a question!

Q. How is this different from the previous lecture, <Growing into a Senior Developer>?

The course <Growing into a Senior Developer> is a lecture that covers how to grow from a junior or mid-level developer into a better senior developer. While that course did touch upon communication skills and team management methods, it did not specifically cover competencies from the perspective of a 'manager.'

Through this course, we cover what a manager does and which areas are good to develop from a [Manager's] perspective. I believe this is a great course for those transitioning from a developer to a manager, or for those starting out as a manager for the first time, to get a feel for the role.

There was quite a bit of helpful content. It may seem like a no-brainer, but I will take it to heart by reflecting on it once again. However, it would be more helpful if there were more specific examples.
