Hello everyone. This is Jeong Chae-sang 🙂

I have been working as a developer in the broad sense of the word for over 25 years . I started as a junior engineer at a Korean venture company, and worked at a global company called Telecar and the ETRI Research Institute. After that, I joined Google's Korean expansion in 2007 and worked at Google headquarters in Korea and the US for about 13 years . I started as a software engineer and later worked as a tech lead and people manager at Google .

After that, he worked at Samsung Semiconductor Research Institute in the U.S., and since 2022, he has been working as a senior manager as a technology director at Banksalad in Korea , taught students at KAIST Graduate School of Management, and continues to play various roles in the field.

Among my many experiences, in this lecture, I would like to share what I learned and experienced while taking on the role of Manager and Leadership. Since it was a new challenge, there were many things I was worried about, but I gathered the content based on what I wish someone around me had done for me at the time.

From Senior Developer to Manager!

Entering

After I started doing well in my work and was recognized as a senior engineer, I started to think about what kind of challenges and growth opportunities would be next. As I worked in a team, I was given a role in dividing the work in the same direction as my colleagues. After the days when I could just do pure development, I felt challenged and a little scared to have to experience more of the world.

When I took a moment to look back, I thought that it was similar to following the development of technology around me, and that I was becoming a slightly different person as I got older. I also thought that when I first learned about computers, there was no Internet. I was grateful for the opportunity to be in the middle of such a drastic change, and I wanted to share a little story with my juniors who will be learning and creating new technologies for the next several decades.

What is a manager?

When a manager enters the role or job title of Engineering Manager, Project Manager, Product Manager, etc., the achievements of 00 in front of Manager become of great value.
For example, for a People Manager, the happiness and performance of his or her team members are of utmost concern.

This lecture was created with a focus on becoming a manager from a senior developer, but you will also see the virtues of a manager and the big picture of what needs to be done :)

Section 1. The Flower of the Organization - The Manager's Work

Are there some big themes?

(1) What a manager does

As the organization grows in size, the role of managers becomes more important for the organization to be effective. Many of you will be directly or indirectly acting as managers, so tell us what you expect from working with your colleagues.

(2) Evaluate

The most important part of what a manager does is to evaluate each other, which is the most important role in leading each other to grow beyond simply giving grades. We talk about what concerns and issues to share in each process.

(3) Good habits

What are some good habits to have as a manager? He talks about his experiences on delegating, surviving in an organization, and managing his time well.

(4) Similar cases

By talking with people from various companies, I was able to think about similar cases together. I share the things I discussed while sharing similar concerns.

How did you put the contents together?

After working as a manager for over 15 years after being a developer, I have gathered the education I received about the challenges after becoming a senior developer, my practical experiences, and stories from colleagues I have shared my concerns with. I have organized the things that my friends who worked hard as managers needed, the memories of not being able to help them, and the things I would like to teach to new managers.

Q. How is this different from the previous lecture, <Growing into a Senior Developer>?

The lecture <Growing into a Senior Developer> is a lecture that covers how to grow from a junior or mid-level developer to a better senior developer. The lecture also covers communication skills and team management methods, but it does not cover the capabilities of a 'manager'.

This lecture covers what a manager does and what aspects you should improve on from a [manager] perspective. I think this is a great lecture for those who are switching careers from developers to managers or are just starting out as managers.
