“What does a data analyst do?”

Hello. This is Datarian Yoon Seon-mi.

One of the most frequently asked questions I received during the seminars in January and February was, "What does a data analyst do?" I heard that there are a lot of people hiring data analysts these days and that the future outlook is good, so I think there were a lot of people who were curious about what kind of work data analysts do.

So, the topic of the March seminar is "What does a data analyst do?" and we will be giving lectures on funnel analysis and user behavior data analysis, which analysts do as if it were their daily job. The lectures will be given by two Datalian members (Kim Min-joo and Lee Bo-min).

The Datalian monthly seminar is divided into two parts. Part 1 is a lecture, and Part 2 is a Q&A. As with every month, we received many good questions this month as well. In the January and February seminars, most of the questions were from students and job seekers, but this time, there were many questions from people who work with data in the field, such as planners, marketers, and data analysts, just as many as from students and job seekers .

The Q&A will continue in Part 2, so if you have any questions that you think , “Oh! I’ve been wondering about that too,” please sign up for the March seminar.

Questions received so far ٩( ᐛ )و

- When I hear something like, ‘This month’s monthly key indicators fell. Please report the data and find out what the cause is.’ I don’t know how far I should go in the analysis and convey it. (Marketer A)

- I can analyze, but it's hard to devise a strategy. How do you respond to questions like, "I understand the analysis results and I know this is the problem... so what should I do?" (Data Analyst B)

- If you could go back a few years from now when you were working as a data analyst, what advice would you give yourself? - Student C

- Is there a specific order to how you analyze user data? Or do you start with everything and find insights? (Marketer D)

- I'm trying to introduce the concept of funnel analysis to an organization that has little experience in data-based decision making. As the service develops, I feel the importance of customer analysis, but it's not easy to convince them. What is the easiest way for team members to experience funnel analysis? (Planner E)

- The scope and potential of data-driven decision making today (or in the future) (Student F)

- I wonder if there is an average for funnel analysis. (Job seeker G)

- When I interviewed the data team of a large distribution company, I was told that they mainly handle requests from other teams (marketing, sales, etc.). Depending on the size of the company and the industry, the role of analysts is bound to vary. (Student H)

- Please recommend books or videos that beginners can study on methodologies such as Funnel and RFM! While studying on my own, I found that theories such as ML/DL can be easily accessed by searching, but there aren't many lectures or books that teach about analysis methods that are actually used. (Job seeker I)
