Tizen is an open-source mobile operating system primarily designed for portable devices like mobile phones, but also intended for inclusion in all electronic devices, such as TVs and refrigerators. Tizen is based on the Linux Foundation's Linux kernel and is built on HTML5 and C++. It also provides various tools and APIs necessary for application development through a software development kit (SDK).
A third mobile operating system announced by the Linux Foundation in September 2011. It is a standards-based, open mobile operating system that runs on a variety of devices, including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and netbooks. All APIs support web standards such as HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS. It was once a dark horse in the smartphone competition between Apple and Google, and development was led by electronics manufacturers and telecommunications companies. However, recent delays in Tizen's commercialization plan and the accelerated departure of telecommunications companies that had joined the Tizen camp have led to growing skepticism.
Samsung Electronics has released the Samsung Gear series using Tizen, and plans to release a Tizen phone using Tizen as its operating system in the second half of the year. There are mixed views on the future of Tizen, with some predicting that it will be able to build its own ecosystem to compete with Apple and Google, while others argue that it will fail due to being pushed by the two major players. Currently, the Samsung Gear 2/Gear S is equipped with Tizen, and the Samsung Galaxy Gear also offers Tizen through updates. Samsung had also planned to release a Tizen-powered smartphone called the "Samsung Z," but the release was indefinitely postponed due to factors such as the recent deterioration of the smartphone business and the intensifying competition in low-priced smartphones.
[2] It has been reported that Samsung has canceled the launch of the 'Samsung Z' and plans to sell a Tizen-powered smartphone called the 'Samsung Z1' starting in India on January 18th and in China in February. Since then, as the possibility of Tizen OS's success in the smartphone market has decreased, Samsung has been increasing the influence of Tizen by installing the OS on wearable devices such as the Gear series and smart TVs. For example, it has decided to apply the Tizen OS to all smart TVs released after 2015 by introducing the SUHD TV, a premium model equipped with the Tizen OS with a non-cadmium quantum dot display. In the future, it plans to expand the Tizen OS to home appliances such as washing machines and use it as a stepping stone to pioneer the IoT (Internet of Things) market.
