Engine Course for UI Designers (Intermediate)

Welcome to the Unreal Engine UMG Intermediate: UI Nodes, Materials & Direction course.

Take a look around once again to see what this course is all about! This time, we're going to cast some spectacular spells using the ingredients we covered in the introductory course! Why not try imagining what kind of wonderful magic you'll create with spells like BP nodes, materials, and particles?

🪄Before we begin...

Just as you feel you've become somewhat familiar with the basics of UMG as a UI designer, another giant wall appears before us. "How do I make a circular cooldown?", "I want to attach a sparkle to the end of the gauge and make it rotate?"

Even when you watch various tutorials to implement the flashy effects described in the planning document, your mind often goes blank because you can't understand what they're talking about. Unreal's Material System is incredibly powerful, but that also means the barrier to entry for mastering it is quite high.

This course is an intermediate skill-up lecture for UI designers who are feeling that sense of helplessness. Together with Teacher Lucy, who started as a UI designer and gradually transitioned into a programmer, you can unravel seemingly complex formulas in a fun way with various cute illustrations (this time too!). And as a bonus, don't miss out on various tips for Unreal Engine 5!

From Absolute Value, Frac, and Pythagoras (VectorLength) to Arctangent! You'll realize that these math-heavy nodes are actually magic spells for creating stunning visual effects.

After completing this course, you will be able to create most materials and gain the skills to apply them even further. You will also be able to create sequences from start to finish by using various arrays and timers in your work.

I wish all of you taking this next step forward the best of luck and continued growth!

✨ What will we learn in the intermediate course?

Section 1. Let's take an overview of UMG in Unreal Engine 5.

This course will be conducted in Unreal 5! Therefore, we will get ready by reviewing the content covered in the previous introductory course and taking a look at the newly added features unique to Unreal 5.

Finally, Unreal 5!

Section 2. About BP Nodes

You will learn about the BP node structure, which we only briefly skimmed through in the introductory level, in much more detail! We will learn about various variables, events, functions, macros, and more, and we'll also have time for hands-on practice.

There are illustrations in the intermediate level too!

Section 3. About UI Materials

This is the material class, which could arguably be called the highlight of this course. You will build a solid theoretical foundation of materials—including material parameters, functions, various operations, and UVs—and use that knowledge to create various UI materials yourself. We will even create a beautiful radial gauge using only materials, without using a single texture.

Radial Material and Sparkles✨

Section 4. Particles and Widget Wrap-up!

Can you render particles created in the Niagara Particle System to the UI? Of course! In this session, learn how to use the Niagara Particle UI Renderer, and as a bonus, get a brief introduction to using Niagara while learning how to integrate particles into the UI!

A taste of Niagara!

🐥Expected Q&A

Q. Wow, an intermediate visual effects course! But why is there more theory than in the introductory one? I thought I'd be learning a lot of flashy techniques.

  • Flashy and spectacular effects! How great would that be? I love flashy things too, so I can relate!
However, to be a bit firm, simply following and connecting flashy nodes made by others without knowing the principle of 'why it moves this way' ends up being 'half-baked study.' When you need to modify materials or BP nodes created that way, if you don't know the theory, you won't know where or how to fix them, and you'll just feel lost.
The reason we cover the theory of materials and BP nodes in even more detail than in the introductory course is that these are the foundations for creating truly great effects later on. If the introductory level is a thatched house, the intermediate level is a tile-roofed house. A tile-roofed house needs a wider and stronger foundation, right?
It might seem a bit dry at first, but once you understand these principles, there will come a moment when you realize, "Ah! If I mix it like this, I'll get that effect!"

Q. I haven't taken the introductory course, can I start with the intermediate course?

  • To start with the conclusion, of course it's possible! However, there is one small condition.
If you have never opened Unreal Engine in your life, or if you have never even placed text or images on a UMG canvas panel... unfortunately, I strongly recommend taking an introductory course or basic tutorial first. This is because facing materials and BP nodes without knowing the basic operation of the engine or the basic concepts of UI widgets can feel like too big of a barrier.
On the other hand, if you can say, "I know how to place basic UI widgets in Unreal," or "I've opened a simple Blueprint and connected something like a button click event," then you are more than welcome to skip the introductory course and dive right in!
This course goes beyond basic operations and focuses on the question, "So, how can I render this UI more dynamically and efficiently?" For those who have dabbled with the engine even a little, this intermediate course will help piece together scattered fragments of knowledge, allowing you to gain a perfect sense of materials and presentation!

Hello! I'm Lucy. I have been in charge of UI design and UX editing for over 10 years and am currently working as a UI programmer. Based on my journey from starting as a UI designer to becoming a programmer, I have launched an Unreal Engine course for UI designers. Since many more people than expected loved my previous introductory course, I have created an intermediate course, specifically focusing on presentation, thanks to your support. I look forward to your interest!

If you post any questions you have on the Q&A board, I will do my best to help you. Even if it's not necessarily a technical issue, questions seeking advice are also welcome. 😊

Eunji Lim (Lucy)
Senior Unreal UX Editor / UI·UX Designer

Hello! I'm Lucy~

It has already been over 10 years since I started working in game UI/UX. During that time, I served as the UI Team Lead for the ArcheAge War team at XLGAMES and worked as a Senior UX Editor at NCSOFT, where I was responsible for interactive UI systems and Unreal-based UX pipelines for large-scale projects.

That’s why I don’t just focus on design; I also have a deep understanding of how UI functions within the engine.
As a result, I’ve always been thinking about ways to help designers and programmers understand each other better.

My class aims for "Unreal Engine that designers can understand."
Instead of just listing difficult functions, it is a class where we solve how to handle the parts that frequently cause bottlenecks in actual professional work together.

I believe that game UI is truly complete only when design sensibility and technology meet.
In my lecture, I will guide you step-by-step through practical, realistic know-how that you can apply immediately in the field, in a comfortable manner.

  • Key Experience

    • 2024–2025 | NCSOFT – Senior Unreal UX Editor

      • I was responsible for building Unreal-based UX systems and streamlining UI pipelines.
I took on the role of designing UI/UX toolkits and interactive widget structures for large-scale projects, improving collaboration efficiency between designers and programmers.

    • 2017–2024 | XLGAMES – UI Team Lead / Lead Designer

      • I led the UI department to complete a large-scale project prepared over three years and subsequently spearheaded the launch of 'ArcheAge War.'
I oversaw the establishment of the overall UX visual language, the creation of style guides, and the improvement of the engine pipeline.

    • Previous Experience | Participation in various projects and editor tool development

      • I have extensive experience in practical system design, including developing internal UI editors and establishing prototyping environments.
