Why Horror Games Feel More Personal Than Horror Movies

There’s a specific kind of silence that only happens in horror games. Not the cinematic kind, where the soundtrack cuts out right before a jump scare. I mean the silence that settles in when you stop moving because you genuinely don’t want to open the next door.
Movies rarely create that feeling for me anymore. Games still do.
Part of it comes from control. Horror games force participation, and participation changes fear into something heavier. You aren’t watching somebody make a bad decision in an abandoned hospital. You’re the one inching forward with one bullet left, already regretting every resource you wasted twenty minutes earlier.
That difference sounds obvious, but emotionally it’s massive.
