Your presentation speaks volumes

Several years ago, I was asked to give a presentation at a large corporate research institute. Unlike other lectures, they contacted me with a tight deadline. When I asked the person in charge why they were rushing, they said their superiors were dissatisfied with the researchers' presentations and had to re-train them. I immediately understood the situation. These researchers had never given reports or presentations before. Despite having earned a PhD in engineering abroad, they had failed to explain their expertise in a short time frame that laypeople could easily understand.

Not only knowledge workers who write reports daily, but also researchers, field workers, medical professionals, and those majoring in the arts and physical education eventually face the challenge of presenting their work in writing and speaking. Unfortunately, audiences judge individuals based on their written and spoken words rather than their inherent abilities. A poor presentation can undermine your own abilities. Therefore, effectively communicating your thoughts to an audience through written and presented writing is an essential skill for everyone.

Focus on planning and think from the audience's perspective 😀

If my first book, "PowerPoint Blues," written in 2009, was about my experiences writing reports over 16 years of working life, this course is Season 2 of "PowerPoint Blues," adding to the stories of those I've met through lectures over the next 10 years. Through "PowerPoint Blues," I argued that developing logical development skills, rather than writing skills, can have a greater impact on creating effective documents and presentations, a view that remains valid today. Some key points this course pursues are as follows.

  • Shift to the habit of separating planning and writing and focus on planning.
  • Identify your audience's stereotypes and design a response that will resonate with them.
  • Establish a simple logic and add flow and details to form a narrative.
  • Design so that the audience can understand it quickly and without misunderstanding.

Due to the nature of my job as an educator, I often create lecture materials. And I am a MacBook user who uses PowerPoint more than Keynote. Whenever I prepare a new training course, I often get stressed out because of my poor skills, despite my desire to do well. That is why I applied for this course without hesitation when an acquaintance recommended it to me. Usually, it is not easy to complete this online training course, but as the work-from-home period began due to COVID-19 and the period became longer, I was able to take the course consistently and enjoyably. Clean training materials, Clear content delivery, And great tips generously shared. This is often called 'cost-effective' right?^^ I was able to learn a lot at a low cost. One thing that was disappointing was, (I will probably improve this in the next course) The soft voice was transmitted through a good microphone, so when I focused, there were times when the flow was broken when a dry cough was transmitted as it was. Maybe it's because I'm too sensitive.^^; Anyway, I really enjoyed the lecture! You said there are 4 months left. I can't help but pay attention to the technical things you mentioned in the latter part, but I'll try to look at the things you emphasized in the beginning again. I regret not being able to attend the lecture you gave to physical therapists in Gwangju two years ago. I hope we can meet offline someday. Thank you!

I liked the tips in the second half that could be applied immediately to real life situations.

I am a person who writes proposals and teaches, although not often. I always had a hard time planning content and writing materials, and as a countermeasure, I often filled in the missing content by drawing pretty shapes or fancy diagrams. After listening to this lecture, I learned what had been frustrating me and was able to receive good teachings to improve. This lecture is worth the money, and I am grateful that the course period was extended after I gave my opinion on Facebook. I will watch it again whenever I have time. ^^ P.S. The "Wall Street Journal Infographic Guide" that you mentioned during the lecture also arrived today and I will enjoy reading it. It would be better if I compared it to the "Dashboard Design and Data Visualization" that I had before. ^^
