E-book Creation Class: Creating [The Little Prince] Epub E-book with Sigil

Using the public domain book "The Little Prince" as practice material, you will experience the process of understanding e-book structures and completing a production-ready EPUB file. The course covers the differences between e-book formats (PDF and EPUB), the structural characteristics of EPUB, and step-by-step XHTML/CSS-based editing methods using Sigil. To ensure that students unfamiliar with HTML or CSS can follow along, we will also cover the essential HTML/CSS basics required for e-book production. In the latter half of the course, we will address table of contents, covers, and metadata settings, along with error validation using generative AI. With a focus on distribution to domestic e-book platforms, the course is designed to help you move beyond just "having tried it" to a level where you can independently modify, refine, and distribute your work. This course is designed for learners who want to achieve tangible results, ranging from beginners with no prior e-book production experience to instructors, researchers, and creators looking to expand their lecture, research, or publishing content into e-books. ** HTML / CSS, e-book distribution, etc., will be added in the future.

🌹 My First EPUB E-book Creation Journey: Completing "The Little Prince"

What can you learn through this course?

This course is not just a simple list of features. By using the public domain book "The Little Prince" as practice material, you will experience the entire process of creating a complete e-book firsthand.

  • Understanding the Essence of EPUB: You will learn how it differs from simply creating a PDF and create a 'responsive' format where the font size adjusts according to the reader's device environment.

  • thoughtful OK even if you can't code: For those unfamiliar with HTML/CSS, I will pick out and teach you only the 'essential basic knowledge' necessary for e-book production.

  • thoughtful How to Use Generative AI: I will share how to utilize AI to resolve errors that occur during production and to validate code.

  • Preparation for Actual Distribution: Complete a file ready for immediate upload to domestic distributors (Ridi, Aladin, etc.) by finishing everything from cover design application to table of contents organization and metadata settings.

In which fields is it mainly used?

  • Novice Creators: Beginners who want to publish their manuscripts as formal e-books

  • Instructors and Researchers: Those who want to convert their lecture notes or research materials into professional digital content.

  • Aspiring Solo Publishers: Those who want to acquire the production skills to edit and refine their own work without the cost of outsourcing.

Background of Course Planning: "Why must it be Sigil?"

While there are numerous automatic conversion programs, many files are rejected during the actual distribution process due to "file errors." While producing e-books, I realized that "once you know how to handle the code yourself, making a book is not difficult." Sigil is open-source yet offers the most powerful editing features. I have included my history of trial and error so that your precious manuscripts can look beautiful on any device.

What you will learn

Example Epub file to be actually created

In this course, we will clarify the concept of e-books and get familiar with Sigil, the production tool. We will start with theory and progress to the stage of actually implementing the content of "The Little Prince."

  • The difference between PDF and EPUB: Why aren't PDFs sold in bookstores?

  • Sigil Installation and Configuration: Set up an optimal workspace for efficient editing.

  • Hands-on! Creating The Little Prince: Learn how to create an ebook in Sigil using a raw manuscript as your material.

  • E-book Functionality Guide: Provides easy-to-understand explanations of core features that determine the form of an e-book, such as links, TOC, stylesheets, custom fonts, metadata, and cover images.
