Hello everyone. This is Jeong Chae-sang 🙂

I have been working as a developer in the broad sense of the word for over 25 years . I started as a junior engineer at a Korean venture company, and worked at a global company called Telecar and the ETRI Research Institute. After that, I joined Google's Korean expansion in 2007 and worked at Google headquarters in Korea and the US for about 13 years . I started as a software engineer and later worked as a tech lead and people manager at Google .

After that, I worked at Samsung Semiconductor Research Institute in the US, and since 2022, I have been working as a senior manager as a technology director at Banksalad in Korea , and I also taught students at KAIST Graduate School of Management, and I continue to play various roles in the field.

Among the various experiences, in this lecture, I will share the regrets and good and right memories from my junior days from the perspective of what I learned and experienced while working as a manager. I gathered the contents mainly based on stories that I wish I had heard from people around me at the time, although I didn't see them well when I was running hard.

I feel like I've become a junior developer, but what else can I do?

Entering

I had a great experience creating meaningful results with colleagues who were better than me at work. It was a little uncomfortable to be limited to being a developer, but the experiences of creating what I wanted together became good memories over time, and I was recognized by people around me and became a senior developer before I knew it, and I was approaching the appearance of my seniors who I envied. I thought that I just had to be good at coding, but I learned very late that in order to do well at work, I needed to do more things with others.

Are there some big themes?

(1) Let's achieve results

The first important factor in growing as a senior developer is 'performance'. We talk about understanding the expectations of the organization, completing and repeating projects, gaining trust, and how to make a mark on the organization.

(2) Let’s increase our influence

Once you have achieved a certain level of success, you may be wondering what to do next. We will talk about ways to take on a role and increase your influence.

(3) Let’s communicate

The most important thing in work is 'communication'. From a senior developer's perspective, we talk about how to communicate effectively with managers, fellow team members, and other team members.

(4) Let’s develop good habits

What are some good habits for a senior developer to have?
We'll talk about how to organize/record your own career and update your resume.

How did you put the contents together?

As a developer and manager for over 25 years, I have met many people in the field and have collected things other than coding that helped them grow into senior developers. Thinking of developers or junior developers who are going beyond personal skill development, and thinking about how I wish someone had told me this when I was running forward without looking back, I have included memories of when I was working as a developer myself, things that my friends who worked hard as managers needed, and memories that I was unable to help.

I recommend this to these people!

A true senior developer is
Those who are worried about what to do

For those of you who are curious about the role of a senior developer from a Korean or American developer perspective

Teamwork and communication skills
Developers who want to improve

Will taking this course make any difference?

I hope you can mentally prepare for the experiences you are experiencing now or will experience in the future. And I hope you won't hesitate to be a little more courageous. I hope you will have the confidence to try many stories and new efforts other than coding, and I cheer on the juniors who are proactively defining and solving problems. I hope that my warm heart will be conveyed.

I think this lecture will be very helpful for junior to mid-level developers. It was good for understanding the context because it explained specific cases and experiences, and it was an opportunity for me to imagine the situation I am in (or will be in the future) and practice how to deal with it in advance. Thank you for the great lecture!

Although all the contents are correct, I think it would be better if there were more specific contents. There were only rough guidelines and a few specific cases.
