[7 O'Clock UX Bible Deep Dive 3] Elements of Experience Design

From planning great screens to designing experiences.

The UI screen is part of the user experience. Only by understanding users’ goals and the product strategy, then connecting them to functionality, information architecture, interactions, and screens, can we design the experience as a whole.

Jesse James Garrett’s *The Elements of User Experience* is a book that explains the process of designing experiences using the widely known 5 Plane Model (shown below). It follows five layers—strategy, scope, structure, skeleton, and surface—showing what each design activity is for and how they connect. This perspective is an essential skill for planning user experiences, going beyond the role of a mere screen designer.

When planning AI, the important question doesn’t end with “Which screens should we add AI to?” We need to consider what role AI plays in the user experience and how it should change the experience as a whole. This book’s experience-centered perspective will give you a solid starting point if you want to plan UX and AI beyond the screen.
