Exploring the Cultural History of Wine in Classical Chinese Poetry

Section 1 - Introduction and Early Spread of Wine

In this section, we explore the process of how wine was first introduced to China and its early spread through Zhang Qian's mission to the Western Regions. As grape cultivation and winemaking techniques were transmitted from the Western Regions, wine was initially perceived primarily within the imperial court as a precious foreign beverage and a medicinal substance.

Section 2 - Wine Culture during the Reign of Emperor Wu of Han and the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties

We examine the process by which wine established itself as a symbol of luxury and power through the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern dynasties following its introduction during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han. We also analyze how wine was appreciated and interpreted in literary works through descriptions of wine in early classical Chinese poetry.

Section 3 - The Golden Age of Wine Culture in the Tang Dynasty

We explore how the wine culture reached its golden age during the Tang Dynasty. We analyze Emperor Taizong's introduction of brewing methods and the popularization of wine, as well as how prominent figures of the era, such as Li Bai and Wang Han, expressed romance and satire through wine in their poetry.

Section 4 - The Loss of Wine and Wine as a Medium for Friendship in the Song/Jin Dynasties

As we enter the Song and Jin dynasties, we examine how literati such as Ye Mengde and Lu You captured friendship, joys, and sorrows in their poetry through wine, amidst the scarcity of grapes caused by the loss of wine-producing regions and changes in brewing methods.

Section 5 - The Golden Age of Wine in the Yuan Dynasty

We highlight the Yuan Dynasty, when wine experienced its second golden age as exchange with the Western Regions surged alongside the expansion of the Mongol Empire. We analyze the lives and humor of the common people through the wine culture depicted in Yuan Qu (Yuan opera/poetry), amidst the imperial sacrificial wines and preferential policies.

Section 6 - Decline during the Ming/Qing Dynasties and the Reintroduction of Modern Wine

We explore the process through which Western wine was reintroduced during the Qing Dynasty following the Ming Dynasty's wine policies and the rise of Baijiu, leading to the birth of the modern wine industry. We focus on analyzing the changes in wine culture during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Section 7 - Changes in the Symbolism of Wine in Classical Chinese Poetry by Era

We will comprehensively summarize and analyze the characteristics of classical Chinese poetry from each era, along with how the symbolism of wine has changed and evolved throughout the entire lecture. Through this, we will understand the multi-layered meanings of wine as depicted in classical Chinese literature.
