Lesson Overview Body

This lesson is not a fun one.

It’s about calculations. We’ll cover how to simplify polynomials and how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide them. It’s also the part many people found most boring during their school years.

However, if this section is weak, every unit that follows will be on shaky ground. Factoring is essentially reversing the expansion you learn today, quadratic functions involve working with perfect-square expressions, and even calculus is ultimately a tool for measuring changes in polynomials. What you learn today is not a method of calculation, but the language you’ll use for the next five months.

However, we’ll approach it differently from school. I won’t make you memorize seven multiplication formulas. Instead, we’ll derive the formulas ourselves using a diagram that divides a square into four parts. Then you can see why 2ab appears in the middle. Once you know how to draw this diagram, you can recreate the formula anytime, even if you forget it.

Finally, we learn synthetic division. It is a tool that lets you complete polynomial division in half the time, and there are exactly two points where mistakes occur. We identify those two points in advance and check them in an example.
