Introduction to CARE Essays for English-Taught Admissions at Japanese Universities

This is an introductory Korean-language course for students and guardians who are exploring English-taught degree programs at Japanese universities but feel overwhelmed about what to check first and how to prepare in what order. Starting with the stage of compiling university names, we will look together at how to read official application guidelines, the roles of documents and exams, and the process of connecting experiences to an essay outline.

In the theory section, we organize the basic framework needed to understand English-language admissions. Even for degree programs taught in English, the requirements may vary depending on the university, faculty, and intake period. Rather than making judgments based solely on the school’s name, we practice checking official information at the program level. We distinguish between proof of English proficiency and academic tests, and also examine the role each application document, including recommendation letters and essays, plays.

In the essay, you first read what the prompt is asking and learn how to connect real experiences to your academic interests. CARE is a framework for organizing an outline in four steps: Claim, Anchor, Reflect, and Extend. You practice supporting your claim with evidence from your experiences, reflecting on what you learned from them, and then connecting those insights to future academic questions.

The practical exercises use the profile of one fictional high school student. We follow the same case through researching universities and programs, organizing common application documents, checking GLA application requirements, designing a CARE outline, structuring an educational draft, and reviewing and revising sample answers. By examining the explanations and usage scenarios for each step together, you can see the contexts in which the prompts are used. We also cover the practice of verifying the sources and application requirements appearing in AI responses against official materials.

The exercises are based on 2027 admissions cases, and the fictional profiles and AI-generated examples are materials for learning the structure of essays. When applying in practice, write your essay yourself based on your own experiences and follow the school’s policies on AI use, original authorship, and citations. Recheck the application schedule, recommender eligibility, and exam and document requirements in the official application guidelines for the year in which you plan to apply.
