[NetMiner 4] Two-Mode Network Analysis

Although the majority of real-world data consists of '2-mode' relationships—such as buyer–product, user–content, and word–document relationships—have you encountered distorted metrics or limitations in data transformation from blindly applying conventional 1-mode analysis methods? We present clear solutions ranging from the core principles of 2-mode networks to data conversion and direct analysis (Direct/Bipartite) approaches, as well as hands-on practice in user profiling and association analysis using NetMiner. Spend less time struggling with data conversion and metric calculation, and take your research and professional insights to the next level with unparalleled 2-mode network analysis capabilities spanning text, bibliographic, and SNS data.

Key lecture content

  • This course teaches comprehensive approaches and methods for representing and analyzing two-mode networks—the relationships between two node sets (2 nodesets)—such as individual–group affiliations, individual–event participation, buyer–product purchases, cuisine–ingredient usage, user–content interests, business–field classifications, word–document occurrences, individual–project participation, and country–international organization memberships. The course focuses on the theory and examples of 2-mode network analysis, which has great practical utility in SNA, as well as hands-on analysis exercises.

  • Q1. Why is this course necessary?

    A. 2-mode network analysis is a broad field that constitutes a very important part of SNA theory and applications, with separate frameworks established for data representation, visualization, and analytical methods. The analysis of bibliographic data and text network analysis covered in the research trends analysis course, as well as social media analysis, can in fact be viewed as extensions of 2-mode network analysis. Therefore, an in-depth understanding is also necessary to conduct text analysis or SNS analysis in earnest.

  • Q2. Is 2-mode network analysis very different from 1-mode network analysis?

    A. Since 1-mode and 2-mode data differ in format and nature, the analysis methods may also differ considerably. For example, the degree centrality analysis technique

Although it can be applied to both 1-mode and 2-mode data, the way centrality scores are calculated differs. The concept of a clique as a cohesive group is also applied differently in 2-mode

They are applied differently. Above all, two-mode data can be converted into two one-mode datasets and can also be analyzed directly as a bipartite graph.

Since there are various conversion methods and analysis techniques, the direction of result interpretation may also vary. In this course, we cover two approaches to 2-mode data,

In other words, we cover both the conversion approach and the direct approach.
