It makes me realize that you don't need anything fancy and that the lights we used before are still good.

What you will gain after the course

  • Analyze lighting in commercials, music videos, and narrative films created for clients

  • What type of camera and lighting did you use, where did you place it, and why did you make those choices?

  • How to make great videos on a low budget

About the lecture

In this lesson, we'll analyze the lighting in commercials, music videos, and narrative films we've created for clients over the past year. We'll show you which cameras and lighting types we used, their placement, and why we made those choices.

I produce low-budget commercials and videos ranging from $2,000 to $20,000 , so you'll see me using affordable equipment you can find. In fact, you can use any camera, including your cell phone, and as long as you know how to turn on the light , you can capture cinematic footage.

Whether you're a beginner or experienced filmmaker looking to learn about lighting or one-man production teams, this class will teach you interesting techniques and enhance the production value of your videos.

Some lessons may feel relatively long, lasting around 10 minutes, but I encourage you to stay tuned. I begin each lesson by explaining the background of the project, then discuss the type of lighting used, its location, and the reasons for it. Finally, I show you before-and-after photos of my work and conclude the lesson by explaining the assignments for you.

Project Description

At the end of each lighting lesson, we ask you to create a short scene using the techniques used in the lesson. The techniques covered in the lesson are as follows:

  1. Handling the top light
  2. A color temperature combination reminiscent of a Hollywood blockbuster
  3. Natural indoor lighting
  4. Product photography lighting
  5. A combination of strong and soft lighting
  6. Etc. Etc.
