This was a lecture where I learned so much. I was always vaguely curious about what kind of data analysis work DBAs do, and this was an opportunity to broaden my thinking about their role. I also learned more about SQL that I had been using without really understanding. Especially, analyzing channels through sessions was really fascinating. So that's how they collect data..!! Since I'm still at a junior level, everything felt so new and interesting. I'll study harder. Thank you, Giyong!!

If you are studying data-related subjects, I think it would be good to set this lecture as your top priority...!! This is a good lecture that scratches the itch of beginners or those at the elementary level, such as why to learn SQL, what the role of each grammar is, and what to do when you don't know!!

The best of both worlds from extensive practical experience + university lectures... It's so great that you don't just make us memorize syntax and learn mechanically, but explain the principles of why we use this grammar...!

What you will gain after the course

  • SQL syntax and data analysis skills using SQL

  • How to use the DuckDB data warehouse

Learn from a 30-year Silicon Valley data expert
Practical SQL for Data Analysis

Hello. I am Ki-Yong Han, a Silicon Valley data expert with 30 years of experience. After starting my career at Samsung Electronics, I left for Silicon Valley at the age of 31. I share my knowledge of data warehouses and SQL based on the know-how I gained from building data teams at organizations such as Udemy (listed on NASDAQ in 2021) and Polyvore (acquired by Yahoo in 2015) and providing data consulting to various Silicon Valley and Korean companies.

How do we handle data in practice?
Can I solve this by just learning SQL grammar ?

•••

No it is not

Practical SQL must be learned from a data analysis perspective

When and which SQL syntax to use
We present a “logical approach”

SQL is a core tool for data management and analysis. SQL is used in all processes of designing databases, creating tables, extracting necessary data, and analyzing them. Therefore, you should start by understanding the database and table structure. In other words , when you understand how data is organized and stored, you can develop the ability to use various SQL grammars appropriately for the situation .

Lecture Features

The most widely used and easiest to install practice environment

This lecture uses DuckDB, the most widely used embedded data warehouse database, and Google Colab as a practice environment. In many cases, if it is paid or the installation is complicated, setting up the practice environment itself can be a big obstacle to learning. For that reason, we have set up a practice environment that is easy to install but meaningful enough to know.

Data analysis tips for practical use

We will explain using a practice table similar to the user data that you will frequently encounter in practice. We will introduce data analysis tips for marketing, such as Google Analytics’ session, customer satisfaction measurement method (NPS), and how to check data quality.

SQL problem solving with 5 real-life examples

We have included 5 data analysis cases that are frequently experienced when operating a service. For each case, we will examine the table schema and practice SQL step by step. We will cover join strategies that can be applied without difficulty to any database, group rankings, and aggregate functions such as partion by and group by.

How to use artificial intelligence for data analysis

In the bonus section, we will walk you through the process of presenting SQL problem texts to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini and receiving and verifying the results. We hope you will gain insight into how to improve the efficiency of data analysis with AI.
(This section will continue to be updated with additional classes.)

After earning a Master's degree in Computer Science, my career began at Samsung Electronics and led me to Silicon Valley thanks to a friend. Over the past 29 years, I have worked at 13 companies across various stages (startups, major corporations, and numerous early-stage ventures).

  • Yahoo: Developed search engines as an Engineering Director.

  • Udemy. Built the data team from scratch and grew it to 30 people. Listed on NASDAQ in October 2021.

  • Samsung Electronics

  • ...

I took an 11-month break in between and built my own brand while unintentionally taking on roles such as an angel investor (Chartmetric, Goodtime.io, Select Star, EO, Business Canvas, ...), advisor (Moloco, Blind, Wolbu, ...), and consultant (SK Telecom, Hyundai Card, E-mart, etc.). I believe in the power of positivity to see failure as a lesson rather than just failure, and the power of compounding that comes from consistency.

Thank you for the detailed course review. If you're interested in data collection, I also recommend the Airflow course. It requires some Python knowledge, but I believe it won't be too difficult if you learn by asking ChatGPT and others. I'm rooting for you!

Thank you! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I also uploaded an Airflow lecture three weeks ago. I'm planning to upload a Spark lecture in two weeks, and I'll continue to upload lectures on search engines, recommendation engines, and A/B testing. I would appreciate your continued interest.
