Set theory

What you will gain after the course

  • Understand the basics of mathematics for data analysis

  • Understand the exact meaning of words such as sets, propositions, and functions.

No matter what math you study
Let's start with the most basic set theory! 🗂️

The very front of the math book
It was always a gathering. 📖

No matter what type of mathematics you study, sets are always fundamental. So, we're all familiar with terms like sets, propositions, and functions. But how many people can truly explain them?

With the recent rise of data analysis and artificial intelligence, the importance of mathematics is being emphasized even more . Linear algebra and calculus are frequently mentioned in this context. However, even if you're a liberal arts or science major, if you haven't taken these courses properly, these subjects can feel overwhelming. Even if you seek out easier content, you'll still feel a sense of emptiness. This is because we've skipped over set theory, the foundation of all mathematics. I decided to focus my lectures solely on the core concepts in set theory that will continue to appear .

Lecture Structure 📝

Chapter 01. Gathering, the first step!

  • Learn terms such as axioms, definitions, and theorems, and cover basic set operations.
  • Learn how to use logical and definition symbols.

Chapter 02. Proposition

  • We start with basic logical operations and learn about propositions like "If p, then q."
  • You can learn about sufficient and necessary conditions.

Chapter 03. Functions

  • Learn what a function is and its various characteristics.
  • We draw a story to define the inverse function and tie together concepts that were previously played out separately.

Chapter 04. Gathering, One Step Further!

  • We'll be discussing the size of sets. We'll learn about infinity as well as finite sets.
  • Learn about equivalence relations and partitions with easy examples, and also try out related proofs.

Lecture Features ✨

  • This is a lecture you can take regardless of your current math knowledge.
  • If you continue your studies in mathematics starting with this lecture, you will be able to build a much more solid mathematical knowledge.
  • This is something I've organized while studying, teaching, and using mathematics in my field, and thinking that you should know at least this much.
  • The lecture will be conducted in English, but all explanations will be in Korean.
  • All videos have subtitles.
  • The video sound may occasionally skip, but please understand that this is due to my poor video editing skills.
  • There are no separate references, so you only need to prepare notes to take notes.

Answers to frequently asked questions 💬

Q. I'm a math dropout and haven't studied math in a long time. Can I still take this course?

Of course! This is a lecture you can listen to without any prior knowledge.

Q. The mathematics I need doesn't require a deep level of knowledge. Should I still study set theory?

Set theory is the foundation of all mathematics. The content itself is more unfamiliar than difficult. Regardless of the level of mathematics required in the future, I strongly recommend that you go over the set theory content at this level.

Q. Why is the judgement conducted in English?

Most mathematical terms are much easier to understand in English. Many terms from set theory are also well-known in Korean, so it's important to understand both. Therefore, while the text will be in English, the Korean definitions of relevant terms will also be provided throughout the lecture.

It's the best! The explanation is really good and the tone of voice is so good that it goes right into my ears. I want to recommend it widely because it explains the main points without going into a long story.

Thank you for your kind words. If you continue to study mathematics, you may have some shortcomings in cardinality and other areas, but from my experience, there were not as many cases as you might think. In fact, I thought that the contents covered in the current lecture were the core, so I organized the lecture, and although you will not completely understand it just by listening to the lecture, I think it can at least serve as a good reference. I hope it will be of some help to you in your future mathematics studies. Thank you.

This set theory course was really helpful in understanding the concepts of terms. Of course, you won't learn everything in one study, but this course helps you understand the flow and learn what to study later when needed. The time is just right, the lecture tension is good, and the best part is that there are subtitles so you can see unfamiliar terms. However, I think I'll have to keep a textbook next to me to solidify the concepts the teacher mentioned. If there's a textbook that I can easily review or study, I'd appreciate it if you could recommend one. I'm also looking forward to the next linear algebra. Teacher! Thank you for the great course.

Congratulations on completing the course, and thank you for your sincere evaluation! If you want to focus on set theory, you can read Pinter's Lecture Notes in Set Theory. I found a Korean version. It's much more than the current lecture, but I hope you'll look at the methods for comparing sizes between sets, infinite stages, and equivalent axioms including the axiom of choice. The content I covered in the lecture is a compilation of concepts that appear commonly in linear algebra and other subsequent subjects, so I think you'll be able to get a greater synergy if you study other mathematics. :)
